๐จ ๐ข Webinar Alert!
At a time when Philippine schools are navigating a major shift in early-grade language policy, conversations on multilingual education have become more urgent than ever. With the enactment of Republic Act No. 12027, Filipino and English have become the primary media of instruction from Kindergarten to Grade 3, while the use of the mother tongue is now optional under specified conditions. This change raises important questions about literacy, access, cultural representation, teacher practice, and the learning experiences of children across the countryโs diverse linguistic communities.
The Philippine Normal University, through the College of Advanced Studies, invites educators, researchers, policymakers, and graduate learners to:
โThe Current State of Multicultural and Multilingual Education in the Philippines: A Professional Sharingโ
Through perspectives from Ilocos Norte, Metro Manila, Eastern Visayas, and Mindanao, the event will examine how national language policy is understood, negotiated, and translated into literacy instruction in varied local contexts. It will also provide a space to ask a crucial question: How can education respond to policy change without losing sight of learnersโ languages, identities, cultures, and actual classroom realities?
The program features Dr. Aurelio Agcaoili of the University of Hawaiโi at Mฤnoa as keynote speaker, together with scholars from the Philippine Normal University, Mariano Marcos State University, Mindanao State UniversityโTawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography, Leyte Normal University, and Mindanao State UniversityโIligan Institute of Technology.
