The Legacy of UP’s Highest GWA Holders in History
Before the establishment of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman as the main campus in 1949, the university’s original campus was located in Manila. It was during this early period that Exequiel Sevilla, a Bachelor of Science in Commerce (now BS Business Administration) graduate, made history with an unparalleled academic achievement that remains unmatched to this day.
Sevilla achieved a perfect General Weighted Average (GWA) of 1.00, meaning he earned a flat 1.00 in every subject from his first year until graduation. This feat made him the first and only UP student to achieve a perfect average, a record that still stands as one of the most remarkable milestones in the university’s long and prestigious academic history. Although the curriculum and grading systems have evolved over time, Sevilla’s achievement remains a timeless symbol of academic excellence in its purest form.
During the Japanese Occupation (1941–1945), the University of the Philippines was forced to close, reopening only in 1946 after the war. Just a few years later, another exceptional scholar emerged: Emerenciana Yuvienco-Arcellana, a Political Science graduate from the class of 1948. Arcellana achieved an outstanding 1.02 GWA, becoming the first woman in UP history to earn such high honors and setting the all-time record in her field. Her achievement came just 35 years after UP’s founding (excluding the wartime years), and she remains unmatched as the highest-ranking Political Science graduate in UP’s history.
Three decades later, in the early 1980s, shortly after the lifting of Martial Law, another student would follow in their footsteps. In 1982, Gertrude Gwendale Baron, a BS Zoology major, achieved a remarkable 1.028 GWA, ranking her among the top three highest GWA holders in UP’s history at that time. Her accomplishment was particularly notable, coming during a challenging period of national transition and educational reform.
Nearly three decades later, in 2011, John Gabriel Pelias, a BS Mathematics graduate from UP Diliman, made headlines for earning an astonishing 1.016 GWA, the highest in modern UP history at that time and the second-highest overall among male graduates since 1908. His feat was even more impressive considering the rigor of his discipline, widely regarded as one of the toughest in the country. Pelias’s achievement earned him national recognition and a place among the greatest scholars UP has ever produced.
Then, in 2015, history was rewritten once more. Tiffany Uy, also a BS Biology graduate, achieved a record-breaking 1.004 GWA, surpassing all post-war academic records. Her nearly perfect grade average made her the highest GWA holder in the post-World War II era, as well as the highest-ranking female student since UP’s founding in 1908.
While it is difficult to directly compare these scholars due to differences in academic systems, curriculum design, grading scales, and potential grade inflation across eras, each of these five individuals stood as the pinnacle of excellence in their respective generations.
From Sevilla’s perfection in pre-war Manila, to Arcellana’s pioneering brilliance after the war, Baron’s intellect during a time of political recovery, Pelias’s mathematical mastery in the digital age, and Uy’s scientific excellence in the 21st century, each represents the evolving yet enduring spirit of UP scholarship.
What unites these individuals, beyond their near-perfect academic performance, is their humility, discipline, and dedication. Despite their extraordinary achievements, they have remained grounded and modest, embodying the UP motto of “Honor and Excellence” in its truest and most timeless form.
