When Giuseppe Sarto became Pope Pius X in 1903, he chose a simple but ambitious motto for his pontificate: "To restore all things in Christ."

The son of a poor village family in northern Italy, he rose through the priesthood to become Bishop of Mantua, Patriarch of Venice, and eventually Pope. As pontiff, he worked to renew the Church's spiritual life, encouraged the faithful to receive Holy Communion frequently, and promoted the reception of First Communion by children at a younger age. He also undertook significant reforms of the Church's liturgy, sacred music, and canon law.

For Pius X, renewal was not simply a matter of administration or policy. It began by bringing Christ closer to the ordinary Christian—especially through the Eucharist, sound catechesis, and a deeper life of faith.

He died in 1914, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, and was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1954.

Saint Pius X, pray for us.

Today, August 21, we commemorate Ninoy Aquino Day, honoring the life and legacy of Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino Jr. and remembering the courage and sacrifice that marked a significant chapter in Philippine history.

May this day remind us of the value of courage, freedom, democracy, and service to the Filipino people—and of our shared responsibility to help build a nation grounded in truth, justice, and peace.

As we remember the past, may we continue to carry forward the values that inspire us to serve the common good.

We remember. We reflect. We serve. 🇵🇭

At a time when many had become distant from the truth of the Gospel, Saint Dominic de Guzmán understood that authentic preaching begins with a life rooted in prayer, study, and charity.

Moved by a deep desire to lead souls to Christ, he traveled from town to town on foot, engaging people with compassion, listening before teaching, and proclaiming the faith with conviction rather than condemnation. In 1216, he founded the Order of Preachers (Ordo Praedicatorum), entrusting his brothers with a mission that continues to this day: to contemplate the truth and to share its fruits through preaching, teaching, and the pursuit of knowledge.

More than eight centuries later, Saint Dominic's vision lives on in Dominican schools, parishes, and universities around the world. It is through this same tradition that the University of Santo Tomas, the oldest existing university in Asia, was founded by the Dominican Fathers in 1611. As a Dominican institution, UST-Legazpi continues to share in this rich heritage—forming individuals who seek truth, deepen their faith, and dedicate their knowledge to the service of God and society.

As we celebrate the Solemnity of Saint Dominic de Guzmán, may we renew our commitment to the Dominican ideals of prayer, study, community, and service. Like our holy founder, may we become faithful seekers of truth and compassionate bearers of the Gospel in the world today.

Saint Dominic de Guzmán, pray for us.
