🌍 Strengthening Global Partnerships Through COIL! 🤝💻

Visayas State University Isabel proudly takes another significant step in its internationalization journey through the initial Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) discussion with the Durban University of Technology (DUT), South Africa. Represented by Ms. Mandisa Kamwendo, DUT COIL coordinator.

This milestone meeting marks the beginning of a promising academic partnership that aims to integrate global and intercultural perspectives into engineering education through virtual collaboration. The initiative will initially involve the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE), and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) programs, providing students and faculty with opportunities for collaborative learning, intercultural exchange, project-based activities, and future joint research initiatives.

Through the COIL Program, students will engage with their counterparts from South Africa in meaningful academic experiences that enhance global competence, digital collaboration, critical thinking, and cross-cultural communication—preparing them to become globally competitive engineers equipped to address real-world challenges.

This partnership reflects VSU Isabel's unwavering commitment to expanding international academic collaborations, enriching engineering education, and fostering innovation through accessible global learning experiences.

Together, VSU Isabel and Durban University of Technology are connecting classrooms, cultures, and future engineers—building a global community of learners without borders.

📌 𝗖𝗜𝗘 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄:

Industrial Engineering was not my first choice.

Like many students, I chose it as my second option while hoping to get into my dream program. At first, I thought I was simply settling for an alternative. Looking back, I realized it became my first lesson in Industrial Engineering. The best decision is not always the first one. Sometimes, it is the one that creates the greatest value. Today, I can honestly say that choosing BS Industrial Engineering was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Despite its impact, Industrial Engineering remains one of the most misunderstood engineering disciplines. I have been asked many times, "Way board exam ang IE?", "Engineering ba gyud na?", or "Unsa diay nang IE?" Those questions used to bother me. Today, they simply remind me that many people do not fully understand what Industrial Engineering is and why it matters.

The truth is, Industrial Engineering has never been about proving who can solve the hardest equations. It is about solving real-world problems. Like every engineering program, Industrial Engineering students study Calculus, Engineering Sciences, Statistics, Engineering Economics, and many other technical subjects. These build the foundation of the profession. But what truly makes an Industrial Engineer is the ability to use that knowledge to improve systems, solve problems, and create practical solutions that make work and life better.

Industrial Engineers are trained to look at the bigger picture. We do not focus solely on one task or department. We study how people, processes, technology, information, and resources work together as one system. While others may see problems, Industrial Engineers see opportunities to improve. We ask a simple but powerful question: How can this be done better?

That question has improved factories, hospitals, supply chains, offices, government services, and many other industries. It has helped organizations reduce waste, increase productivity, improve quality, and deliver better services. Most people may never realize that an Industrial Engineer helped make those improvements possible, but they experience the results every day through systems that work more efficiently and effectively.

This is my .. why Industrial Engineering ?

It is about improving the way people and systems work together to create value. It teaches you to think critically, make data-driven decisions, solve problems creatively, and lead continuous improvement. If you enjoy organizing ideas, finding better ways to do things, solving practical problems, and helping people work smarter, you may already have the mindset of an Industrial Engineer.

However, one question always comes up: "Does Industrial Engineering have a board exam?" The answer is no. At present, there is no PRC-administered licensure examination for Industrial Engineers in the Philippines. But perhaps the more important question is this: Does a board exam define the value of a profession?

The value of a profession is measured by the problems it solves, the people it serves, and the impact it creates. A title or a license can be an important professional milestone, but they do not define your ability to make a difference. What matters most is your competence, your integrity, and your commitment to creating value wherever you work.

Industrial Engineering is a profession of lifelong learning. As industries continue to change, Industrial Engineers continue to grow. Beyond earning a degree, you can pursue professional certifications and advanced training in Lean Six Sigma, Supply Chain Management, Quality Management Systems, Data Analytics, Project Management, Operational Excellence, Artificial Intelligence, Business Transformation, and many other fields. You may also earn the Certified Industrial Engineer (CIE) credential through the Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineers (PIIE). These credentials strengthen your professional growth, but they do not solely define who you are. Your knowledge, your character, and the value you create will always matter more than any title written after your name.

The work of Industrial Engineers is not always visible, but its impact is everywhere. Every process that becomes faster, every system that becomes more efficient, every resource that is used wisely, every workplace that becomes safer, and every service that becomes better reflects the work of people who believe that improvement is always possible.

If you are looking for a degree that prepares you not only for your first job but for a lifetime of opportunities, Industrial Engineering is worth considering. If you want a profession that will remain valuable in a world shaped by digital transformation, automation, artificial intelligence, and constant innovation, Industrial Engineering offers the knowledge and skills to grow with those changes. More importantly, it prepares you not just to adapt to change, but to help create it.

Choose a profession that will challenge you to think critically, solve meaningful problems, and make a difference wherever you go. Choose BS Industrial Engineering, not because it is the easiest path, but because it prepares you to create value in every organization and every community you will serve.

The future will always belong to people who make things better. That is what Industrial Engineers are trained to do. And perhaps that is the greatest reason to become one.
