"For a bakery like ours, it meant more than handing out the bread, receiving payment, and giving change. It also meant taking care of small tasks: preparing the baking sheets, helping with pagpipigura (shaping) and pagkakamada (organizing) of the small cuts of dough, and coating everything with fine bread crumbs to avoid sticking. All of which were, to an extent, enjoyable except for the part where I had to stand near a hot commercial oven."

"Perhaps what terrifies us most is not death itself, but the loss of the humble joys of life. Not being able to witness another sunrise, not hearing another story, not tasting another meal that reminds us of home, not feeling the warmth of another embrace. The fear of losing all of these awakens something deep within, as if the mind is overwhelmed by the beauty of being alive."

Ma'am Shaunnah's co-written chapter (w/ sir Malabed), "Orality as Object: The Material Life of Philippine Metrical Romances and its Depiction of Women" from the book The Filipino worldview through art, images, and objects. From indigenous cultures to the 19th century published by Universidad Pablo de Olavide Sevilla EnredARS and RomaTre-Press.

The Philippine corrido reached the apex of its popularity in the 19th century as the bestseller of its day. However, intellectuals who considered literature a source of national identity found these long verse narratives too fantastic, sentimental, religious, and didactic—too colonial. This paper ...

We are pleased to announce the latest issue of Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance (Vol. 5, No. 2). You may access the issue here: https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/akda/

Our latest issue is a convergence of various scholarly voices attending to the critical and creative discourses on the colonial imaginaries of rural cities, the literary and everyday contestations in urban spaces, the uneasy queering and gendered representations in Philippine cinema, and the affects of revolution and literature. Altogether, these articles scale the spaces of the urban and rural, interface our imagined and contested realities, and interrogate our lived and filmic selves.

Akda Vol. 5, No. 2 includes the following articles:

Regular Articles:

1. From Fort to Prison: The Production of Iloilo City
Ram Paulo A. Anayan

2. Graffiti, Neoliberalismo, at Tunggalian para sa Espasyo sa Lungsod Quezon (Graffiti, Neoliberalism, and Contestations for Space in Quezon City)
Harvey James G. Castillo

3. Cemented Republic: Infrastructure and Slow Violence in Jun Cruz Reyes’s Ang Huling Dalagang Bukid at ang Authobiography na Mali: Isang Imbestigasyon
Jonah Leigh E. Ramos

4. Reading-as-Lesbian and Desiring-as-Lesbian: The commodification of kilig and coming-of-age in Samantha Lee’s Billie and Emma (2018)

"Meanwhile, Ani’s motivation is the desire to serve. After majoring in creative writing and fine arts in undergrad, she hopes to become a cultural heritage lawyer, fighting for the repatriation of stolen artifacts. 'A lot of our indigenous people deserve to have access to their own culture,' she states, citing that a majority of the Philippines’ cultural objects are stored in museums abroad."
