🍫 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐑𝐍𝐑

Students of FRM 131 visited Filipinas Oro de Cacao, Inc. (Auro Chocolate) Factory at Filinvest Park, Calamba, Laguna, to explore the cacao-to-chocolate value chain and learn about the operations of a chocolate enterprise. The visit helped them examine sourcing, processing, quality control, marketing, and value addition, while recognizing the role of cacao agroforestry and sustainable sourcing in supporting farmer livelihoods and forest-based enterprise development.

Through the industry visit, students connected classroom learning with real enterprise practices, deepening their understanding of sustainable cacao production, business development, and value creation. 🌱🍫

The Institute of Renewable Natural Resources (IRNR), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), through the Watershed Resilience Group, successfully conducted the Brown Bag Seminar on “Ridge-to-Reef/Watershed Ecosystem Management (R2R/WEM) Approach 101” on October 12, 2026.

The webinar featured Dr. Rex Victor O. Cruz, Professor Emeritus of UPLB, who shared valuable insights into the interconnectedness of terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal marine ecosystems and the importance of managing watersheds as integrated systems.

Emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration between LGUs and NGAs to address fragmented governance and promote sustainable watershed management, Dr. Rex shared that "Watershed Management is MAN-centered. We manage resources and processes, but ultimately, we manage the people".

The Watershed Resilience Group extends its appreciation to Dr. Cruz and all participants for making this learning session a meaningful opportunity for knowledge exchange and collaboration.

🌿🪨🥾𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗥𝗡𝗥: 𝗡𝗥𝗖 𝟭𝟯𝟬 𝗚𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗶 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲🌳🏔️

Taking learning beyond the classroom and into the great outdoors, the NRC 130 Nature-Based Leisure and Recreation class recently embarked on an immersive field learning experience at Masungi Georeserve in Baras, Rizal. Surrounded by towering limestone formations, lush forests, and unique karst landscapes, the field activity provided students with an opportunity to experience firsthand the diverse dimensions of nature-based leisure and recreation.

Through the Discovery Trail experience, students explored how natural landscapes can serve as spaces for recreation, environmental education, and meaningful connections with nature. More than an outdoor adventure, the visit encouraged students to reflect on how nature-based recreation can be thoughtfully designed and managed to balance visitor experiences with the protection of biodiversity, landscapes, and other natural resources. 🌿💚

📌 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦:
✅ Scheduling: Carefully read and follow the instructions provided in the Google Form to ensure the smooth processing of your defense schedule and avoid unnecessary delays.
✅ Publicity Materials: All undergraduate students are required to submit a public invitation material (pubmat) for their thesis proposal or manuscript defense. The prescribed template is available through the Google Form. Submitted pubmats will be posted on the official IRNR page.
✅ Submission of Manuscripts: Thesis proposals or manuscripts must be submitted to all panel members at least two (2) weeks before the scheduled defense.
✅ Final Defense Deadline: The last day for conducting thesis proposal and manuscript defenses is 23 November 2026 (Monday).

Students are strongly encouraged to coordinate closely with their respective thesis advisers before submitting their preferred defense schedules. Please use your official UP Mail account when accomplishing the form.

The Institute of Renewable Natural Resources (IRNR) of the UPLB College of Forestry and Natural Resources is supporting the Machine Learning of Physics-Based Earthquake-Induced Landslide Parameters for Efficient Prediction and Warning in the Philippines (ML-PREP) Project of Caraga State University (CSU) through laboratory-based soil characterization.

As part of the collaboration, the ML-PREP Project team is conducting hydrometer analysis of soil samples collected from selected landslide and non-landslide sites in Agusan del Norte. The analysis will generate particle-size distribution data needed to characterize the physical properties of soils at the study sites and provide important inputs for the project’s landslide prediction and modeling efforts.

The activity builds on ML-PREP’s ongoing research collaboration with IRNR through Dr. Jenielyn T. Padrones, with the support of IRNR Director Dr. Rogelio T. Andrada II, Soils Laboratory Administrator Dr. Albert Piñon, and University Research Associate Albert Sanfuego. The ML-PREP Project is a DOST-PCIEERD-funded project led by Dr. Jayrold P. Arcede and currently spearheaded for the Geotechnical team by Engr. Marc Lin Abonales.

The collaboration facilitates access to IRNR’s laboratory expertise and facilities while strengthening knowledge exchange between researchers working on soil characterization, landslide processes, and geohazard assessment, such as the IRNR-implemented project LIGTAS AGAD Project 1. The ML-PREP Project has identified soil physical and geotechnical parameters as important inputs for validating and constraining its physics-based models.

Through initiatives such as this, UPLB IRNR continues to strengthen inter-institutional research partnerships and support the application of natural resource science to disaster risk reduction, helping advance science-based approaches toward safer and more resilient communities.
