PhD in Applied Mathematics UPLB The first and only doctorate degree in Applied Mathematics in the Philippines... The goal of the Ph.D. The Ph. D.

AMAT program is to produce innovative problem solvers, combining advanced-level mathematical science and domain knowledge to help address local and global challenges. Students will be trained in formulating multifaceted solutions to complex interdisciplinary problems, which will involve data analytics and informatics as well as design and future thinking. This program also provides opportunity to students to take Research and Development Internship to expand and diversify their knowledge, consulting skills, leadership values, professional linkages, and collaboration networks beyond what the academia can offer. AMAT in UPLB is the first mathematics-related doctorate program that requires industry and practice-based research and development internship. Internships can be done (locally or abroad) in knowledge-intensive or research institutes, government agencies, non-government organizations, or industries.

A PhD journey is also about finding the right mentors.

At the UPLB Institute of Mathematical Sciences, PhD Applied Mathematics students work with an advisory committee that guides them from admission through graduation --- bringing together expertise in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics with specialists from relevant application areas.

The advisory committee is composed of 4-5 members. Typically, 2-3 members come from IMS, while the remaining members may come from the student’s chosen application area. Students may also invite qualified experts from outside UPLB, subject to applicable university policies and approval.

This structure allows students to build a mentoring team that combines strong mathematical foundations with substantive expertise in the field where the mathematics will be applied.

Our IMS faculty work across a wide range of fields, including mathematical biology and epidemiology, data science and machine learning, optimization and operations research, financial and actuarial mathematics, graph theory and networks, differential equations, numerical analysis, stochastic modeling, quantitative risk assessment, complex systems, and many more.

Beyond IMS, UPLB has experts across a broad range of interdisciplinary areas, including food security and sovereignty, One Health, resilience and sustainability, future communities and institutions, social justice and cultural flourishing, among many others.

So whether your research question begins in mathematics, biology, health, agriculture, environment, finance, management, development, resilience, or another application domain, there are opportunities to build a mentoring team around the problem you want to study.
