Congratulations, UPLB Delegates, for winning in the Short and Sweet Play Dialogue Category of the 12th PASUC National Culture and Arts Festival (NCAF) 2026, held from April 6–12, 2026, at West Visayas State University in Iloilo City.

Congratulations to the faculty members of the Language Division of the Department of Humanities (DHum) for receiving a research grant under the Local Regional Studies Network (LRSN) of the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies. This project is part of the University of the Philippines Los Baños’ broader initiative to advance interdisciplinary research in UPLB toward the establishment of the Interdisciplinary Studies Center - Southern Luzon.

The Likhaan: UP Institute of Creative Writing, in partnership with UP Press and the UP Los Baños Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts, presents the 19th Interdisciplinary Book Forum, featuring "A History of the University of the Philippines, Volume Three: 1975–1987" by Rosario Cruz-Lucero and Katrina Tuvera.

Join us as we discuss key moments in a crucial juncture of the history of the University of the Philippines through a meaningful conversation with distinguished scholars and educators from various fields.

The discussion will bring together notable panelists who will provide deeper insights into the book in its different contexts. The program is open and free to all.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Asst. Prof. Jonelle M. Nieto, DHUM, CAS, UP Los Baños
Jonelle M. Nieto is an assistant professor from the Department of Humanities in UP Los Baños. She teaches the GE course WIKA 1 and BACA core courses on argumentative writing and language and culture. She finished her master's degree in Filipino (Wika) from UP Diliman and her research is primarily focused on language planning.

Prof. Toym L. Imao - Dean, CFA, UP Diliman
Toym Imao is a teacher, human rights advocate, and multidisciplinary artist in both classical and contemporary styles. A sculptor, painter, storyteller, and set designer, he was mentored by National Artist Napoleon Abueva and his father, Abdulmari Asia Imao. He studied Architecture and MFA Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines and earned his MFA in Sculpture with honors from the Maryland Institute College of Art under a Fulbright Scholarship. He also trained and apprenticed in filmmaking under Marilou Diaz-Abaya and credits Alejandro Roces for his deep grounding in Philippine history and culture, having worked with him at The Manila Times as a writer and illustrator.
He creates large-scale historical public art and politically charged art installations. His works have been exhibited at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Ayala Museum, Lopez Museum, and internationally in New York and Washington, D.C. He was an Artist-in-Residence at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore.
Toym received the Cinemalaya Best Production Design Award for K’na the Dreamweaver and is a two-time Gawad Buhay awardee for set design (Mabining Mandirigma and Anak Datu). He designed sets for Ballet Philippines’ Crisostomo Ibarra/Simoun and several productions for Tanghalang Pilipino.
His accolades include the 2022 UP Alumni Association Outstanding Alumni in Sculpture, 2021 Gawad Lampara ng Kultura at Sining, 2017 Metrobank MADE Achievement in Sculpture, Gawad Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan (Manila, 2017), and Gawad Parangal para sa Sining (Quezon City, 2010).
He is the Dean of the UP College of Fine Arts (CFA), and Chair of the UP President’s Committee on Culture and the Arts (UP-PCCA), coordinating programs and policy across UP’s nine campuses. He is also involved in developing the UP Art Conservation Program and initiatives for the establishment of the Institute of Art and Culture Education. He currently sits on the board of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP) and national theater group- the Cultural Center of the Philippine’s Tanghalang Pilipino (TP). He also serves in the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) technical panel for the Fine Arts.

Dr. Roderick C. Javar, DSS, CAS, UP Los Baños
Dr. Roderick C. Javar is a tenured Professor of History at the Department of Social Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). He earned his BA History, MA History, and PhD in Philippine Studies from UP Diliman. His undergraduate thesis examined the institutional history of the Hospicio de San Jose, a Spanish-established hospice on Isla de Convalescencia in Manila. His master’s thesis explored the social biography of Pangat Macli-ing Dulag, the Kalinga chieftain who led the resistance of the Bontok and Kalinga peoples against the Marcos regime’s proposed hydroelectric dams along the Chico River; and was assassinated on April 24, 1980 for his principled opposition to the project. Dr. Javar's dissertation offers a comparative intertextual analysis of systemic biographical distortions surrounding the lives and political careers of Manuel Quezon and Ferdinand Marcos. He currently serves as Director of the Human Resources Development Office (HRDO) and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Administration.

Dr. Nancy Kimuell-Gabriel, DFPP, CAL, UP Diliman
Si Nak Kimuell-Gabriel ay Propesor sa Philippine Studies, Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas, College of Arts & Letters at sa Tricollege Ph.D. Philippine Studies Program sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Diliman. Nagtapos siya ng BA History, MA History at PhD in Philippine Studies sa UP Diliman. Siya ay dating Coordinator ng Diliman Gender Office at TriCollege philippine Studies Program, at dating direktor ng General Education Center. Kasalukuyan siyang Coordinator ng Larangan ng Philippine Studies sa DFPP. Ang tesis niyang “Timawa sa Kasaysayang Pilipino” ay pinarangalan ng De La Salle University noong 2008 bilang Pinakamahusay na MA Thesis sa Filipino. Ang kanyang disertasyon na “Pook at Pagsasakapangyarihan: Ang Kababaihan ng Tundo 1946-2008” ay isa sa apat na Pinakamahusay na Disertasyon sa Kababaihan at Kasarian mula 2010-2015 na iginawad ng UP Center for Women’s and Gender Studies’ Lourdes Lontok-Cruz Awards sa UP Diliman. Isa rin siyang Palanca Awardee sa kanyang sanaysay na pinamagatang “Kubeta. Pinarangalan siya bilang Natatanging Mananaliksik sa Filipino sa Gawad Tsanselor 2022 ng UP Diliman. Pinapaksa ng kanyang mga saliksik ang kababaihan, kasarian, mga uring panlipunan, Batas Militar, araling Tundo, kasaysayang panlipunan at kilusang panlipunan.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR:

Josef Ryan Tosoc is an instructor at the UP Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts, where he teaches public speaking and persuasion. His scholarship is grounded in his various interests, from humor and citizenship studies, and rituals and performances of faith, to children’s literature and critical discourse.

Maliwanag na ang mga leybel na ito ay may historikal at semantikong lalim. Minarapat namin na huwag pasukan ang diskursong ito sa papel na ito. Sa mga pag-aaral na naisagawa na mapapansin na may pagkakasundo sa puntong ang mga bakla o gay ay nakakaranas ng opresyon o marginalisasyon sa ating lipunan (e.g., Garcia, Remoto, Tan, Johnson, Perez). Sa mga pag-aaral na ito, binibigyang diin ang stigma ng pagiging bakla/gay dahil sa tingin ng mga nakararami, ang pagiging bakla/gay ay isang sakit na nakakahawa, kasalanan sa Diyos, kamalasan sa pamilya, kahinaan ng pagkatao, pagiging salot, pagiging sumpa, pagiging katawa-tawa, pagiging gahaman sa seks—lahat ng ito’y nagsisilbing jastipikasyon upang sila ay lokolokohin, kutyain, o dili kaya’y hikayating magbago para maging normal.

Ang papel na ito ay tungkol sa salitang bakla bilang sosyolek. Iti ay aming susuriin bilang wika na umusbong sa kontekstong pakikipagtunggali ng mga bakla/gay sa dominanteng kulturang patriyarkal at Judeo-Christian na bumubuhay sa mga kaisipang nabanggit.

Tatalakayin sa unang bahagi ng papel na ito ang mga istruktural na katangian na gumagabay sa pagbuo ng sosyolek na ito. Ipinapakita rito na ang wikang ito ay nakaugat pa rin sa wikang Filipino. Ang sosyo-ekonomik, rehyunal, interjenereysyonal, propesyon, at edukeysyonal bakgrawnd ng mga mananalita ay nagbibigay daan sa pagbubuo ng mga baryasyon sa wikang ito. Kaya naman, ang pokus lamang ng papel na ito ay ang sinasalita sa isang komunidad sa UP—ang Babaylan. Minarapat naming ito ang maging basehan ng papel na ito dahil ang mga kasapi rito ay kumakatawan sa iba’t ibang sosyo-ekonomik at rehyunal na bakgrawnd. Isa pa, bilang mga kasapi sa organisasyon at gumagamit ng wikang ito, kami ay nasa isang istratehikong posisyon na masuri ang iba’t ibang konteksto ng paggamit ng wikang ito, na siya naming bibigyang pansin sa ikalawang bahagi ng papel na ito. Sa pamamagitan ng mga kongkretong halimbawa, bibigyang diin dito ang tinatawag naming “veiling” o pagkukubli na isang katangian ng salitang bakla. Ang “veiling” ay isang istratehiya sa pakikipagtunggali sa “cultural violence” na bumabalot sa pakikisalamuha ng bakla sa kanyang lipunang ginagalawan.
