UPLB BIOMECH BIOMECH envisioned Excellence in RDE committed to agri-fisheries and biosystems mechanization in the

Center for Agri-Fisheries and Biosystems Mechanization (BIOMECH), formerly known as the Agricultural Mechanization Development Program (AMDP), was established in 1979 to represent the country in the Regional Network for Agricultural Mechanization (RNAM). It serves as the research and extension program of the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology (CEAT). AMDP was strengthened and institutionalized through Republic Act 10601, also known as the AFMech Law of 2013. As stipulated in Article 3, Section 8 of AFMech Law, it shall lead and coordinate the agricultural and fishery mechanization research, development and extension programs of all academic institutions in the country. It was then elevated into the Center for Agri-fisheries and Biosystems Mechanization of CEAT-UPLB through the approval of the Board of Regents on October 29, 2015. For four decades BIOMECH has contributed to the development of agricultural mechanization in the country in terms of academic based research and development, training and extension, policy advocacy and local manufacture of agricultural machinery for the Filipino farmers, extension workers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs and students.

The Center for Agri-Fisheries and Biosystems Mechanization (BIOMECH) welcomed 45 representatives from coconut farmer cooperatives (CFCs) across the Bicol Region, together with 11 personnel from the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Region V Extension Office, on 18 August 2026.

The visit was part of the CDA-led three-day โ€œLakbay-Aral,โ€ themed โ€œBridging Coconut Enterprises to Global Markets: Learning Best Practices in Product Development, Branding, and Trade Promotion.โ€

During their visit, the delegates learned about BIOMECH-developed technologies for village-level coconut processing, including machinery for:

๐Ÿฅฅ Fresh-dry method of coconut oil production
๐Ÿฅฅ Coconut sugar production
๐Ÿฅฅ Coconut drying
๐Ÿฅฅ Coconut oil expelling

Participants also toured the BIOMECH Technology Display Area and CEAT Machine Shop to have a closer look at the facilities that support the development and fabrication of agricultural mechanization solutions.

Through research, development, and extension, BIOMECH will continue to support coconut farmers and cooperatives by promoting mechanization for value-adding, improved product quality, reduced losses, and more competitive coconut enterprises.

For more information and inquiries about BIOMECHโ€™s role in advancing and promoting agricultural mechanization for farmers and fisherfolk, we could be reached through email at [email protected]. Please address requests/inquiries to our Center Director, Engr. Ronel S. Pangan, PhD.

How can we better prepare future professionals or interested individuals for the evolving needs of the agri-fisheries sector and the engineering industry? Microcredentials offer one promising pathway.

The Center for Agri-Fisheries and Biosystems Mechanization (BIOMECH) of the College of Engineering and Agro-industrial Technology (CEAT), UPLB, held the Seminar-Workshop on Microcredential Program Development for Agricultural Machinery Operation and Maintenance on 30โ€“31 July 2026 at the Obdulia F. Sison Hall, UPLB. The event was conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Education of the UP Open University (UPOU) and in coordination with the CEAT Ad Hoc Committee on Microcredential.

The seminar-workshop was facilitated by Dr. Charisse T. Reyes, Dean of the UPOU Faculty of Education. With the guidance of Dean Reyes, participants explored the policy framework for microcredentials, identified gaps in knowledge, skills, and practice within their fields of expertise, and worked collaboratively to develop potential microcredential courses and initial curriculum designs that bridge these gaps and are responsive to workforce and industry needs.

The activity marks another step in BIOMECHโ€™s and CEAT-UPLBโ€™s efforts to advance flexible, competency-based, and industry-responsive learning opportunities in engineering and agricultural mechanization.
