UPLB supports CvSU in advancing WOAH Day 1 Competencies

As an AID-1C Veterinary Education Establishment (VEE) Hub in Southeast Asia, the UPLB College of Veterinary Medicine conducted the AID-1C Facilitator Training for faculty members of the Cavite State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CvSU-CVMBS). The training marks an important step toward CvSU-CVMBS’s AID-1C Curriculum Assessment Workshop in November 2026. Through interactive discussions and facilitator exercises, participants were prepared to guide an evidence-informed assessment of how the DVM curriculum develops the WOAH Day 1 Competencies expected of veterinary graduates.

The workshop brought together CvSU-CVMBS faculty members led by their Dean and UPLB alumnus, Dr. Rezin C. Bahia (DVM ‘99). Facilitating the training from UPLB were Dr. Jovencio Hubert A. Abalos, Dr. Michelle Grace V. Paraso, Dr. Joseph F. Dela Cruz, Dr. Mark Joseph M. Desamero, Dr. Emmanuel P. Hernandez, and Dr. Fletcher P. Del Valle. The activity was conducted with the support of The Ohio State University, a partner of UPLB-CVM in advancing the AID-1C initiative.

Through this collaboration, UPLB and CvSU continue to strengthen veterinary education and support the development of future veterinarians equipped to respond to the evolving needs of animal health, public health, and Veterinary Services.

On September 19, 2026, our faculty members, alumni, and students teamed up with the UPLB Housing Office and valued veterinary and community partners for a successful Free House-to-House Anti-Rabies Vaccination drive.

🐗 One Health in Action: Fighting African Swine Fever Beyond the Farm 🌍

A round of applause to DVCS faculty member Dr. Emilia A. Lastica-Ternura, co-author of the paper “Pathways to Recover Asian Wild Pigs from African Swine Fever” which was recently published in Nature.

African Swine Fever (ASF) isn't just a threat to domestic livestock—it's an escalating biodiversity crisis hitting Asia’s wild pig species hard. This paper, a result of collaborative work among international wild pig and ASF experts, highlights how blending One Health principles with robust wildlife governance can safeguard vulnerable species from extinction while simultaneously reinforcing global food security.

Nature Reviews Biodiversity: African swine fever virus has spread rapidly across Asia, causing lethal disease in several endemic wild pig species and Eurasian wild boar in Southeast Asia, and threatening some species with extinction. In this article, the authors set out a Roadmap for coordinated action to address this emerging conservation, livelihood and food-system crisis.

From theory to practice! 🩺🌿

How do experts safely handle mammals in the wild? Dr. Emilia Lastica-Ternura of DVCS provided the answers on safe capture, restraint, and sample collection during Day Three of the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau with co-organizers Institute of Biological Sciences (CAS) and UPLB Museum of Natural History's month-long training. Dr. Lastica-Ternura actively engages in several activities and workshops as part of her PhD studies on wildlife governance as a driver for interspecies disease spread.
