UPLB Institute of Food Science and Technology A critical mass of leaders, educators, researchers, and public servants in the field of food science

IFST asserts its role in the food manufacturing industry by enhancing collaborative research and providing vital services that will uplift the small industries as well as ascertain the position of IFST in the operations of the big players in the industry to further achieve or maintain their corporate stature. Participation of IFST in the crucial steps of raw material sourcing, quality control programs and manufacturing will provide a strong link between the industry and IFST. The alignment of the functions of IFST to the needs of the industry will strengthen its role for a more progressive Philippine agriculture. It will also accomplish its mandate to help farmers in promoting their produce through value adding and linking with the food industry to introduce and create new product lines from diverse raw materials found in the country. Further, the IFST will continue to:

(1) develop a critical mass of leaders, teachers, researchers and extension workers in food science and technology;

(2) generate basic information through research for the efficient handling, distribution, processing and utilization of agricultural produce;\

(3) develop appropriate and efficient food handling and processing technologies; and provide technical assistance to the various sectors of food industry, particularly the small and the medium enterprises SMEs

๐ŸŒ ๐ŸŒ Sharing Philippine banana research with the world!

IFST researcher Dr. Joel P. Rivadeneira took part in the 13th Central European Congress on Food (CEFOOD) on 23-26 September 2026 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. He presented the current state of banana valorization research in the Philippines and how it can shape policy-making, industry development, and innovation in the food and agriculture sectors.

Biocircularity was one of the conference's main themes, and the talk showed how turning banana by-products into useful ingredients and products can help build circular, sustainable, and resilient food systems. โ™ป๏ธ

On October 3, 2026, IFST faculty members and researchers proudly attended the 1st Annual Conference and General Assembly of the Philippine Consortium of Microbial Resource Centers, Inc. (PCMicRo) at UPLB, with the theme โ€œMicrobial Resource for Sustainable Bioeconomy: Enabling Innovation from Discovery to Application.โ€
