The College of Economics and Management (CEM) was formally created in the 996th UP-BOR meeting, February 1987. CEM traces its roots from the Department of Rural Economics (DRE) which was established at the UP College of Agriculture (UPCA) (now the UP Los Baños)

At present, CEM is composed of three departments – the Department of Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship (DAME). Department of A

gricultural and Applied Economics (DAAE), the Department of Economics (DE), and one institute, the Institute of Cooperatives and Bio-Enterprise Development (ICOPED). The College sees itself as a center of excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction, research and extension in Asia in the fields of economics, applied and agricultural economics, agribusiness management and entrepreneurship, and development cooperatives as viable economic and social enterprises. It envisions to be an institution of higher learning that can serve as catalyst for economic and social transformation. Its two-fold mission is to produce graduates and future leaders with strong training in the above-mentioned fields for meeting the challenges of sustainable and inclusive economic growth and development under a competitive global setting; and to engage in development-oriented research, policy advocacy, and extension services that would promote efficiency, equity, competitiveness, and environmental sustainability of economic activities.

🌈 Building Safer, More Respectful Spaces for Everyone 🌈

This morning, the College of Economics and Management (CEM) gathered at the ICOPED Auditorium for a meaningful Gender Sensitivity and Safe Spaces Act Orientation, attended by CEM faculty, REPS, and staff.

The session was led by , Ms. Jullie-Ann C. Reyes, University Research Associate from the UPLB Gender Center, who walked the participants through important concepts on gender roles, expectations, gender identity, sexual orientations, and the principles behind the Safe Spaces Act. Her discussion offered both clarity and depth — equipping everyone with a better understanding of how gender shapes everyday interactions and how we can foster a more inclusive environment within and beyond the workplace.

In her opening remarks, Associate Dean Che Lou Nuñez emphasized that these topics are not only relevant but deeply practical — reminding everyone that awareness and respect for others should be part of our daily practice, especially in the workplace. Her message set a thoughtful and reflective tone for the rest of the program.

The orientation closed with a synthesis from Asst. Prof. Jhoana V. Alcalde, Chair of the CEM Gender and Development (GAD) Committee, who tied together the day's key takeaways and reaffirmed the College's commitment to upholding gender sensitivity, equality, and safe spaces for all.

A heartfelt thank to Ms. Reyes, the UPLB Gender Center, our CEM leaders, the GAD Committee, and everyone who participated in this important conversation. Together, let's continue building a workplace — and a community — where everyone feels safe, seen, and respected. 💜

Delegates from the Philippine Competition Commission(PCC), the country’s antitrust body mandated to advance market competition, visited the College of Economics and Mmanagement (CEM), UPLB as part of their multi-location campus tour last 27 April 2026.

The visit featured a seminar held at the REDREC Auditorium where the PCC delegation explained the important provisions of the Philippine Competition Act (R.A. 10667) and their agency’s academe-focused initiatives for students, faculty, and researchers in economics, law, management, and related fields.

CEM Dean Prof. Maria Angeles Catelo and PCC Director for Communications and Knowledge Management Dr. Frederick P. Romero welcomed the participants on behalf of their respective institutions.

Ms. Hannah Mariz Rodulfo, Economist II of the PCC Economics Office, presented the basics of market competition, the benefits competition brings to consumers and firms, and the important role the PCC and the Philippine Competition Act play to help ensure a conducive environment that shuns market power and distortions.

Her presentation highlighted the premier role of PCC to investigate cases on firms’ anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant behavior, and anti-competitive mergers and acquisitions.

A presentation by Ms. Rosette Anne R. Consolacion discussed the various programs of PCC for students and academics, such as on internship, the Competition Cup (a series of contests for students), Career Expo, and other activities.

The participants, composed mainly of UPLB-CEM students and faculty, were made to recognize the importance of maintaining competitive markets for consumers to enjoy lower prices, more choices, and better-quality products and services.

The seminar was jointly sponsored by PCC and CEM and upon the invitation of the Department of Economics (DE) and the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics (DAAE).
