The Philippines is a typhoon-prone country due to its location near the world’s busiest typhoon belt in the Western Pacific Basin. These typhoons have consistently resulted in massive destruction, deaths, and floods across the country. According to experts, worse situations can possibly happen due to climate change. This implies that more devastating typhoons and floods are expected to occur. Thus

, the need for flood maps of rivers and a detailed assessment of resources to mitigate disasters is evident. This assessment is vital for the government agencies and local government units for better planning and decision making. The detailed assessment should be able to provide information about the location of available resources, their characteristics and status; and their condition with regard to hazards and vulnerability. With the aim of developing 3D hazard maps for the Philippine river systems and producing detailed assessment of resources towards better disaster mitigation, Phil-LiDAR 1 and 2 were established. Both programs funded by the Department of Science and Technology-Grants-in-Aid (DOST-GIA), were products of the concluded UP Disaster Risk and Exposure Assessment for Mitigation (DREAM) LiDAR project.
