Strengthening partnerships for sustainable agriculture and inclusive growth, Vice Chancellor Haerold Dean Z. Layaoen of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Enterprise Management (OVCIEM), together with the Department of Agriculture PhilRice Nueva Ecija and Los Baños, conducted an exploratory meeting with farmer cooperatives and associations to discuss potential collaboration under the RiceBIS 2.0 Program. RiceBIS 2.0 Project Leader Dr. Diadem B. Gonzales-Esmero (Chief SRS) and Dr. Michelle C. Quimbo (Supervising SRS), along with their team of Science Research Specialists, attended the meeting in UPLB on 18 March 2026.
The meeting provided an avenue to present the RiceBIS 2.0 Program and its current production capacities, while exploring institutional procurement opportunities within UPLB. Discussions also highlighted the relevance of the Sagip Saka Act (RA 11321) in supporting direct market access for farmers and strengthening linkages between agricultural producers and institutional buyers.
The cooperatives who attended were Sorosoro Ibaba Development Cooperative (SIDC) of Batangas City and Naujan, Oriental Mindoro and Pangkalahatang Samahan ng Magsasaka ng Siniloan (PASAMASI) of Siniloan, Laguna. Participants exchanged insights on possible partnership models that will enhance market accessibility, promote fair trade practices, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable agri-food system. The activity also identified potential steps to take toward building meaningful collaborations that empower farmer organizations while supporting the University’s commitment to responsible and inclusive procurement.
Through initiatives such as this, UPLB continues to foster innovation-driven partnerships that bridge research, enterprise, and community development.
