๐๐„๐–๐’ | TCM, CDCโ€™s Par Finish 2nd Runner-Up in VOYAGE ASEAN 2026 Cultural Presentation

The Calayan Minstrels (TCM) and Andrea Chelsey Par of the Calayan Dance Company secured a second runner-up finish in the Cultural Presentation of CHED CALABARZONโ€™s VOYAGE ASEAN 2026 at St. Dominic College of Asia in Bacoor, Cavite, on September 1.

Representing the Lao Peopleโ€™s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), the CEFI representatives were among 11 finalists representing the ASEAN member countries, presenting the countryโ€™s traditions and cultural identity through music, dance, clothing, and the arts.

The delegationโ€™s presentation highlighted the various facets of Lao culture, giving the CEFI performers an opportunity to showcase the traditions and identity of the country they represented on the ASEAN-themed stage.

Behind the performance were TCM Choirmaster Juan Carlo Villanueva and Calayan Dance Company Artistic Director Marc Araneta, who guided the performers throughout their preparation for the competition.

The CEFI delegationโ€™s second runner-up finish was a notable achievement as TCM and Par displayed their talents in a regional cultural presentation alongside representatives from other universities and colleges across CALABARZON.

๐๐„๐–๐’ | CEFIzen Trio Emerges as CALABARZON ASEAN Quiz Bee Champions

Besting 21 other schools, Calayan Educational Foundation, Inc. (CEFI) quizzers clinched 1st Place in the Quiz Bee Competition after amassing 45 points at the CALABARZON ASEAN Festival of Talents and Culture Grand Finals held at St. Dominic College of Asia on Sept. 1.

Representing CEFI in the competition were Alaiza Nicole L. Rey of BSEd-English, Bern Andrei E. Gooc of BS Nursing, and Jeriko A. Mabasa of BS Psychology, who, under the guidance of Prof. John Paul O. Cagadas, worked together to bring home the championship for the institution.

The trio opened the competition with 14 points in the first round and strengthened their standing with 16 points in the average round, securing their place in the final difficult round against the remaining top-performing schools.

In the difficult round, CEFI emerged as the only institution to score in double digits, securing 15 points against four other schools and bringing the teamโ€™s total to 45 points to claim the championship.

The achievement marked a significant milestone for CEFI as the trio outperformed 21 other participating schools from across CALABARZON, showcasing not only their academic preparation but also their ability to perform under pressure in a regional competition.

Mabasa described the win as the culmination of their month-long preparation and a full-circle moment, especially for the teamโ€™s graduating members.

โ€œWinning this championship is a testament of taking up space. At the crossroads of huge, reputable universities in the region, this feat proved that an emerging force like CEFI can be on par with them,โ€ he said.

It may be recalled that the institution secured its spot in the Regional Finals after garnering 53 points in the Provincial Elimination Round held in Lipa City on Aug. 24, earning a place among the five institutions representing Quezon Province.

Every last Monday of August, Filipinos celebrate National Heroes Day, a holiday dedicated to remembering the men and women whose courage and sacrifices contributed to the countryโ€™s history and freedom. More than a day to recall famous names, it reminds us that the story of the Philippines was shaped by countless Filipinos who chose to stand for their fellow countrymen.

National Heroes Day was established through Act No. 3827 in 1931. Today, it is observed on the last Monday of August under Republic Act No. 9492, which reorganized the countryโ€™s regular and special holidays.

The celebration also comes near the anniversary of the Cry of Pugad Lawin on August 23, 1896, when Andres Bonifacio and fellow Katipuneros decided to begin an armed revolution against Spanish colonial rule. The tearing of their cedulas became a powerful symbol of their rejection of colonial authority and their determination to fight for freedom.

True freedom was never won by one or two iconic figures alone. Josรฉ Rizal used his writings to expose the realities of colonial society, while Andres Bonifacio helped lead the revolutionary movement. Others, such as Gabriela Silang, Teresa Magbanua, Apolinario dela Cruz, Miguel Malvar, and Macario Sakay, also became part of the long and complicated history of Filipino resistance and nation-building. Countless ordinary citizens also gave their lives without ever receiving a monument or a line in a history book.

Ultimately, National Heroes Day is a living reminder that our independence was won through immense courage and shared sacrifice. By pausing to remember both the prominent revolutionaries and the forgotten heroes, we keep their legacy alive and ensure that their relentless fight for justice continues to inspire every generation of Filipinos.

Encouraging nursing students to embrace growth, learning, and imperfection, the Lamp Bearers Organization (LBO) of the College of Health Sciencesโ€“Nursing Program held Safe Space 2026 with the theme โ€œBecoming, Not Perfectโ€ on Aug. 28 at the JVC Theater, KRU Building.

The afternoon activity brought together nursing students, particularly first-year students, for self-reflection, personal growth, and meaningful conversations as they navigate their journey in the nursing profession.

The program opened with remarks from LBO Vice President for Internal Affairs Von Christopher Enriquez, who welcomed the participants and set the tone for the gathering.

Ms. Ariane Marie Zarate, a psychology professor from the College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Education of Calayan Educational Foundation, Inc. (CEFI), led the main discussion, emphasizing the value of continuous learning and the courage to try despite uncertainty.

Zarate stressed that people can only fully understand or learn something by experiencing it themselves. โ€œโ€™Di mo malalaman ang isang bagay unless you try it,โ€ she said.

She encouraged students to embrace what they do not know yet, noting that not having all the answers is a natural part of the learning process.

Zarate also reminded the students that they do not have to wait for the โ€œperfectโ€ moment or for everything to fall into place before taking the first step. Beginning even when one feels unprepared, she emphasized, is already part of learning and growth.

Her message reflected the realities of the nursing profession, where students develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence through education and experience in preparation for real-world practice.

Following the discussion, an open forum allowed students to engage with Zarate, share their thoughts, and seek advice on matters related to personal growth and their experiences as nursing students.

The activity concluded with closing remarks from LBO President Rolando Raposa Jr., who underscored the importance of creating spaces that encourage students as they navigate their path in nursing.
