Maajong Adlaw ๐ต๐ญ!
Iโm a proud Surigaonon, and itโs me again โ your Pinoy scientist Jayson () for .
One reason cancer sometimes comes back is because cancer cells are very good at repairing themselves. ๐งฌ
Every cell in our body contains DNA, like an instruction book ๐ that tells the cell how to grow, divide, and function. When DNA gets damaged, normal cells usually repair the damage or self-destruct to protect the body.
But cancer cells are different.
They can use powerful DNA repair systems to survive treatments like chemotherapy or radiation ๐. When they repair themselves successfully, some cancer cells survive โ and the cancer may return.
Thatโs where my PhD research comes in.
I studied a class of drugs called PARP inhibitors ๐.
These medicines block an important DNA repair pathway in cancer cells. Without this repair system, damage accumulates inside the cancer cell until it can no longer survive.
This approach is known as targeted therapy โ because it attacks a specific weakness in cancer cells, unlike chemotherapy which affects many fast-growing cells in the body.
In my research, I tested these drugs in dogs with cancer ๐ถ.
Dogs naturally develop cancers that are very similar to human cancers, so studying them helps scientists discover treatments that may benefit both animals and people ๐ง๐ฆฎ.
The goal is simple:
Understand how cancer survives โ and use that knowledge to develop smarter, more precise treatments.
Every discovery brings us one step closer to outsmarting cancer. โจ
๐ P.S. My research has been published in Q1 scientific journals and has received several international recognitions, including:
๐ 3 Minute Thesis Competition โ Italy
๐ Young Scientist Award
๐ Best Oral Presentation โ International Cancer Conference
๐ต๐ญ From Surigao to the global scientific community โ science can come from anywhere.
