𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐞: A Statement of the Ateneo Law School Student Council on the Philippine Senate’s Shielding of Accountability

The Ateneo Law School Student Council releases this statement upholding accountability, constitutional integrity, and the rule of law, as it seeks to address Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa’s evasion of the warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court, the growing culture of impunity and institutional shielding within the Philippine Senate, and the actions of Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano, an alumnus of the Ateneo Law School, in relation to these developments.

Atty Ma Ngina Teresa "Maita" V Chan-Gonzaga is appointed as Dean of the Ateneo Law School for an initial 3-year term, from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2029.

She succeeds the late Atty Jose Maria "Joey" G Hofileña, who led the Law School from 2018 until his untimely demise last February.

Fifty-three years ago, Martial Law was declared — a chapter of our history written in fear, blood, and silence. Thousands were imprisoned, tortured, and killed. Rights were stripped away, and democracy was nearly buried. But even in the darkest nights, Filipinos resisted. They proved that the spirit of freedom cannot be extinguished.

Today, we march again. The Trillion Peso March is not just a protest against corruption, but a living echo of our people’s defiance — a reminder that when we stand together, we are stronger than any tyrant, louder than any lie, greater than any plunderer.

Now more than ever, and as our solemn hymn instructs, it behooves the Atenean to go down from the hill and into the streets.

From Martial Law to the present day, our struggle continues. For freedom. For justice. For accountability. For the Filipino.
