The observance of National Heroes' Day originated in the early days of the Philippine Revolution in 1896, but the holiday has never really been concerned with a single date or a particular battle; it has always been about the notion that freedom was not simply granted to us, but was instead won, bit by bit, through people who decided to stand up even though doing so came at a real cost.
