Let us celebrate these Masses in loving memory of our beloved Ateneo Law School Dean,
Atty. Jose Maria G. Hofileña,
whose life is indeed changed, not ended.

May the soul of Joey and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

A short wake of the mortal remains of Dean Joey Hofileña is set for Monday and Tuesday, March 2-3, 2026, from 8:00am to 11:00pm, at the St Thomas More Chapel, Ateneo Professional Schools Building, Rockwell Center, Makati City.

Daily masses at the chapel are at 12:15, 6:05, and 8:00pm. Other masses and programs may be scheduled on those days. The wake will be livestreamed on go.ateneo.edu/DeanJoeyDay1 and go.ateneo.edu/DeanJoeyDay2

Please omit flowers. Consider instead donating for scholarships at the Ateneo Law School via go.ateneo.edu/lawfinaid.

Subject to confirmation of date and time, the funeral mass and inurnment will be held at the Garden of the Divine Word Columbary, Christ the King Seminary, E Rodriguez Avenue, Quezon City.

“Bless our Darkness”

The recollection will be followed by the regular anticipated Mass at 5:15 PM.

Recollection master will be Fr. Manoling Francisco, SJ, Professor of Systematic Theology at the Loyola School of Theology.

ATTY. JOEY HOFILEÑA, 1961 - 2026

Atty. Jose Maria Hofileña, accomplished lawyer, Ateneo alumnus, and "Dean Joey" to the Ateneo Law School community he served for 13 years, eight of which as the school's head, died Thursday, February 26. He was 64.

Atty. Hofileña, who taught at ALS since 2013, was appointed Dean in 2018. Before his appointment, Atty. Hofileña was chair of ALS's Commercial Law and Intellectual Property departments.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1983 and graduated from ALS in 1987 as Class Valedictorian. He also held a Master of Laws degree at Harvard Law School received in 1990.

He had been a partner at several firms here and abroad; among them, SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan.

He is survived by his wife, Rappler's Investigative Desk editor and head of training Chay Hofileña, as well as his parents, Hector and Chita, and his three brothers.

Today, Ateneo de Manila remembers the courage, strength, and solidarity of Filipinos, not only in EDSA but across the archipelago, who stood united in a once-in-a-generation struggle to reclaim our nation’s treasured democracy.

Forty years on, that democracy -- however tenuous, however imperfect -- endures, while reminding us of the long road ahead in fulfilling the promise of EDSA.

This is a call for everyone, not just Ateneans, to continue working hand-in-hand in the essential work of safeguarding a democracy that remains fragile, evolving, and unfinished.
