Friday, September 4, 2026 — Mapúa Masterclass on Pediatric Nursing

Being a nurse means more than assisting patients through their healthcare needs. It means providing comfort, building trust, and giving patients and their families the assurance that they are not alone throughout their journey. But when our patients are children, the meaning of care extends beyond the patient, it also reaches the family who stands beside them.

Despite the inclement weather experienced across the Philippines, we continued to make our way to an enriching learning experience as we attended the Mapúa Masterclass, “When Parents Become Partners: Rethinking Family Centered Care in Pediatric Nursing,” led by our esteemed speaker, Dr. Khatijah binti Abdullah @ Lim Geok Khim, Professor and Department Head of Nursing at Sunway University.

Together with fellow nursing students from Mapúa University Makati and Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna, we gathered with a shared goal: to deepen our understanding of what it truly means to provide compassionate and family-centered care in pediatric nursing.

The masterclass reminded us that caring for a child does not stop at treating their illness or addressing their immediate needs. Children are deeply connected to the people who care for them, and involving their families can help create an environment where they feel understood, supported, and safe. Parents are not merely companions in a child’s healthcare journey—they can become valuable partners in providing meaningful and holistic care.

As future nurses, we are reminded that healthcare is not only about clinical knowledge and skills. It is also about empathy, communication, understanding, and creating a safe space where every patient and every family feels heard and valued.

Today’s experience gave us another perspective on the kind of nurses we hope to become, nurses who do not simply care for patients, but care with them and their families.
