On this day, September 21, we recall the signing of Proclamation No. 1081, which placed the Philippines under Martial Law in 1972. Behind the promises of peace and order lay a dark chapter in our history: suppressed civil liberties, media censorship, economic strain, and severe human rights violations endured for fourteen long years. Thousands of youth leaders, workers, and citizens who dared to stand against tyranny were silenced, detained, or forcibly disappeared.
The democratic spaces and liberties we experience today are not mere coincidencesโthey were hard-won by the courage and sacrifices of those who came before us.
As the student body and emerging leaders of Arellano University โ Jose Rizal Campus, our role extends beyond the four walls of the classroom. We are tasked with building a community grounded in integrity and justice. True nation-building cannot stand on foundations weakened by historical distortion, silence, or indifference.
We remain steadfast in remembering the past to protect our democratic future.
