The seminar highlighted the importance of understanding Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), how it is transmitted, how it can be prevented, and why regular testing is essential. As future social workers, the organizers recognized the need to address HIV not only as a health concern but also as a social issue that involves stigma, discrimination, and access to services.
The invited resource speaker, ๐ ๐. ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ผ ๐๐ป๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ, is a seasoned professional with more than 25 years of experience in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). She has worked extensively on programs related to STI, HIV, adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and family planning. Throughout her career, she has served in leadership and technical roles for local and international organizations and has significantly contributed to national and regional HIV response efforts. She is widely recognized as a Master Trainer, resource speaker, and consultant in HIV and SRHR-related initiatives.
During her discussion, Ms. Encabo emphasized that HIV is preventable and manageable with proper knowledge and access to services. She also highlighted the vital role of social workers in responding to HIV-related concerns. She explained that social workers serve as advocates, educators, and support providers for individuals and families affected by HIV. According to her, social workers help address stigma and discrimination, connect clients to essential health and social services, promote mental and emotional well-being, and uphold the rights and dignity of people living with HIV. She encouraged the students to see themselves as future frontliners in the fight against HIVโprofessionals who can create safe spaces, empower communities, and influence positive social change.
Furthermore, the participation of student leaders played a significant role in strengthening the impact of the seminar. As representatives of the student body, they serve as important channels in spreading awareness, promoting responsible behavior, and encouraging their fellow students to engage in conversations about HIV prevention and stigma reduction. Their involvement highlights how leadership within the campus community can help amplify advocacy efforts and foster a more informed and compassionate student environment.o
