Three-Day Faculty Development Workshop
SYLLABUS ENHANCEMENT WORKSHOP
Designing Quality Syllabi for Outcomes-Based Education (OBE)
July 1โ3, 2026
The College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) successfully conducted its Three-Day Faculty Development Workshop on Syllabus Enhancement, with the theme, "Transforming Instruction Through Quality Syllabi, Constructive Alignment, and Outcomes-Based Education." The workshop aimed to strengthen faculty members' competencies in developing quality, standards-based syllabi aligned with Outcomes-Based Education (OBE), ensuring compliance with national educational standards and the evolving needs of the criminology profession.
Day 1: Alignment to National Standards and Structural Mapping
The workshop officially commenced with Opening Remarks and Objective Setting delivered by Dr. John Vencent P. Cazar, who emphasized the significance of curriculum enhancement in producing competent and globally competitive graduates.
The first day featured Lecture 1: The Regulatory Anchors, where participants gained a deeper understanding of the essential educational frameworks, including CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 5, Series of 2018, the CHED Policies, Standards, and Guidelines (PSGs), and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Table of Specifications (TOS). These served as the foundation for designing compliant and relevant course syllabi.
This was followed by Lecture 2: Outcome Cascade and Periodic Sequencing, which focused on aligning course outcomes across the preliminary, midterm, and final periods to ensure a logical progression of learning.
During Workshop Phase I, faculty members mapped their respective course structures into the three academic periods while directly aligning them with CHED requirements and the latest PRC Licensure Examination for Criminologists (LEC) Blueprints, ensuring curriculum relevance and professional readiness.
Day 2: The Cognitive Core (Bloom's Taxonomy, Delivery, and Sourcing)
The second day centered on enhancing instructional planning through learner-centered approaches.
Participants attended Lecture 3: Unlocking the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy for OBE, which explored the cognitive domains and how measurable learning outcomes can be effectively formulated using higher-order thinking skills.
This was followed by Lecture 4: Teaching-Learning Strategies (TLS) and Modern Sourcing, highlighting innovative instructional methods, technology integration, and credible learning resources that support student engagement and meaningful learning experiences.
During Workshop Phase II, faculty members drafted and refined their Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) and developed corresponding learner-centered teaching and learning activities that reflect the principles of Outcomes-Based Education.
Day 3: Closing the Loop (Assessment, Delivery, and Sourcing)
The final day focused on completing the syllabus through effective assessment planning and institutional compliance.
Faculty members participated in Lecture 5: Authenticity in Assessment and Defensible Rubrics, which emphasized the development of valid, reliable, and performance-based assessment tools that accurately measure student learning outcomes.
The workshop continued with Lecture 6: Institutional Integrity โ Grading System and Course Policies, discussing fair grading practices, academic standards, and institutional policies that promote transparency and accountability.
During Workshop Phase III, participants peer-reviewed one another's outputs, finalized assessment rubrics, and assembled their complete Outcomes-Based Education syllabi. The activity concluded with the Presentation of Enhanced Syllabi, followed by the Dean's Synthesis, which highlighted the collective accomplishments of the faculty and reinforced the importance of continuous curriculum improvement.
The workshop officially concluded with the Awarding of Certificates, recognizing the faculty members' active participation, dedication, and commitment to academic excellence and instructional quality.
The Three-Day Faculty Development Workshop on Syllabus Enhancement served as a significant milestone in strengthening the instructional capabilities of the CCJE faculty. Through comprehensive lectures, collaborative workshops, and hands-on syllabus development, participants were able to produce enhanced and CHED-compliant Outcomes-Based Education syllabi that are aligned with national standards and the latest PRC Licensure Examination blueprints.
More importantly, the workshop reinforced the faculty's commitment to delivering quality education through well-designed learning outcomes, effective teaching strategies, authentic assessments, and learner-centered instruction. By ensuring that course syllabi are responsive to current educational standards and professional competencies, the institution takes a proactive step toward producing graduates who are academically prepared, professionally competent, and equipped to meet the demands of the criminal justice profession. This initiative reflects the college's continuing dedication to academic excellence, curriculum innovation, and the pursuit of quality education.
