𝐏𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐓
Food security among refugee populations goes beyond simply providing information. While accessible and culturally appropriate food-related information is important, broader challenges such as income instability, affordability, access to culturally appropriate foods, transportation barriers, social exclusion, and limited social protection can continue to shape people's ability to achieve lasting food security. These issues are highlighted in a published scholarly work by 𝐊𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧 𝐁. 𝐔𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧 and 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐲
𝐓. 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐞 (College of Technologies), together with 𝐊𝐲𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐳 𝐆. 𝐓𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐫𝐨 (College of Arts and Sciences) of Bukidnon
State University (BukSU).
Published in 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, the
international journal published by Cambridge University Press on
behalf of The Nutrition Society, the article entitled “Moving beyond information provision: strengthening structural and outcome-oriented approaches to food security among refugee populations” calls for a shift from information-based interventions toward more comprehensive, structural, and outcome-oriented approaches. The paper emphasizes the
importance of co-designing interventions with refugee communities and strengthening policies that address the underlying determinants of food insecurity, including economic access, social protection, and inclusion within local food systems.
The publication underscores an important message for public health and
nutrition: providing information is necessary, but lasting food
security requires addressing the structural conditions that determine
whether people can actually access and afford nutritious and
culturally appropriate food.
The BukSU community proudly celebrates the authors' contribution to
advancing food security, nutrition equity, and public health research,
particularly for vulnerable and displaced populations.
