The spirit of Filipino hospitality and service excellence took center stage at Surigao del Norte State UniversityโMalimono Campus as the Department of Tourism (DOT) Caraga Region conducted the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE) Training on October 1, 2026.
The one-day training gathered faculty, staff, student leaders, and other campus frontliners to strengthen the culture of Filipino hospitality, courtesy, professionalism, and excellent service.
The activity opened with a message from Ryan Malbas Tapayan, Supervising Tourism Operations Officer of DOT Caraga, followed by the welcome message of Dr. Jerry B. Acero, Campus Director, delivered by Mr. Septeriano Senoc Jr, Culture and Arts Coordinator. Ms. Kristine Joy L. Caingles, Tourism Operations Officer I of DOT Caraga, handled the house rules and introduction of the resource speaker.
The training proper was facilitated by Ms. Marian Jill D. Castrence, DOT Trainer and Resource Speaker, who discussed the four FBSE Modules: The Philippine Tourism Industry Situationer and the FBSE Journey; The 7Ms of Filipino Hospitality and Service Excellence; The G.U.E.S.T. Steps to Service Excellence; and The H.E.A.R.T. of Service Recovery.
A highlight of the training was the introduction and practice of the โ๐๐ข๐ฃ๐ถ๐ฉ๐ข๐บโ and โ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฎ๐ข๐ตโ gestures, simple expressions of welcome and gratitude reflecting the Filipino spirit of warmth, respect, and malasakit.
The activity was made possible through the collaboration of DOT Caraga, the LGUโMalimono Tourism Office, and SNSUโMalimono Campus, with Mr. Dariel T. Bagtaso, Municipal Tourism Officer, delivering the closing message.
A significant role in bringing the FBSE initiative to the Campus was also played by Mr. Senoc, who helped coordinate the activity and advance its campus-wide application.
The October 1 training is envisioned not as a one-day activity but as the beginning of a campus-wide culture of Filipino service excellence.
SNSUโMalimono is preparing to institutionalize the appropriate use of the Mabuhay and Salamat gestures among faculty, staff, security personnel, and students. Students will be encouraged to say โMabuhayโ when entering the Campus and when appropriately greeting faculty members and other campus personnel they encounter within the school vicinity. Frontline offices and security personnel will likewise be encouraged to extend a warm Filipino welcome, while faculty and staff will serve as role models of courteous and excellent service.
From the campus entrance to the offices, classrooms, and walkways, the message is simple:
