Official Statement of BulSUONE reminding University Pres. San Andres of his Duty to Protect Students' Future — Not Government's Interests!
In his attempt to finally break his silence and appear empathetic to students, University President Teody San Andres only revealed his true colors — unwavering, but in defense of government and the status quo; supportive, but only of the Marcos-Duterte administration that perpetually enables corruption. His words were not for the protection of students, but for the protection of power where he benefits from.
While state universities across the country are standing with their scholars in campus walkouts and calls for accountability, San Andres has chosen to turn his back on BulSU students and the marginalized sectors. The “protection” he speaks of is empty — for now and time and time again, he has prioritized shielding the government instead of the student community he is sworn to serve.
The political organization reminds San Andres that the very leaders in Congress and Senate he seeks to “invest everything” in are the same ones reported to have colluded with contractors in fake biddings and "ghost" flood control projects. The investigation he boasts of is led by the very lawmakers accused of budget insertions, like Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Joel Villanueva, who continue to sit in hearings as if they were not implicated.
BulSUONE strongly condemns San Andres’ persistent fanaticism for government and his lack of genuine respect for students and the Filipino people. If he truly meant his words, he would have stood with us today. He would have protected us from police intimidation. He would have ensured a democratic space in the academe where students could voice dissent without fear. All these would haves were abandoned the moment he chose the more comfortable option than to struggle with his own students.
We remind President San Andres: your duty is not to protect politicians, but to uphold truth, accountability, and the interests of your students. The University must not “commit all resources” to failed leaders, nor act as a defender of corrupted policies. Its foremost responsibility is to safeguard its students — their security, their future, and their right to speak against corruption and inefficiency that threaten their communities.
To conceal state robbery is to conceal the truth. To side with the corrupted status quo is to be complicit in it. The University’s duty is to protect its students and community — and the only way to do that is to stand with us.
As for San Andres, neither this statement nor his shift in modality does that — and it’s not as if history will pause for him to come to his senses. We will continue to fight corruption and defend democratic rights, pressing on relentlessly until we uproot the societal ills that plague us all.
Progresibo. Makamasa. Palaban.
