Statement of PUP Institute of Technology and PUP College of Engineering on the Illegal Arrest and Violence Against Gio Caballes

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Institute of Technology and College of Engineering express deep concern and firm condemnation of the illegal arrest and violent assault committed against Gio Caballes, a student of PUP Sta. Mesa, while he was documenting a peaceful protest in Mendiola.

We view this incident as a serious violation of human rights and a direct affront to the academic community. As an institution that upholds critical inquiry, civic responsibility, and democratic participation, we cannot remain silent in the face of such repression.

We respectfully remind authorities that the rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and active engagement in social issues are constitutionally guaranteed. These rights must be protected, not suppressed. Violence and intimidation have no place in a democratic society, especially against the youth whose role is vital in shaping the future of our nation.

Accordingly, we call for:

The immediate and unconditional release of Gio Caballes;

A thorough investigation and accountability for the officers involved in his unlawful arrest and assault;

An end to the criminalization and harassment of students and citizens who exercise their democratic rights.

As educators, we reaffirm our duty to safeguard the welfare and freedom of our students. We believe that education is inseparable from service to the nation, and we will continue to uphold the principles of justice, democracy, and human dignity.

Please be advised that all concerns, especially request for tutorials and request for overload, must be addressed in person at the CPE Dept office, not through Messenger.

Kindly inform all concerns that they should personally come to the office once classes resume.

Ideally, all requests should already be submitted to the office since September 1, when adjustment period started.

We understand that some are frequently unavailable due to other commitments, but this issue cannot be resolved through chat or online messaging alone.

Please also be reminded that we are not a 24/7 call center or online help desk. Please respect our personal time especially during weekend, night time, holidays, etc.

For proper assistance, physical presence in the office is required.
