Limampuโ€™t apat na taon na ang lumipas mula nang lagdaan ni Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. ang Proclamation No. 1081 noong Setyembre 21, 1972, na naglagay sa buong Pilipinas sa ilalim ng Batas Militar. Sa likod ng mga salitang ipinangakong maghahatid ng kaayusan ay isang kabanata ng kasaysayang hindi dapat pinapakinis, binubura, o kinakalimutan.

Sa ilalim ng diktadura, libo-libong Pilipino ang dinakip at ikinulong, sampu-sampung libo ang dumanas ng tortyur, at mahigit 3,200 ang pinatay ayon sa dokumentasyon ng Amnesty International. Sinikil din ang malayang pamamahayag, ipinasara ang mga midya, at pinaghigpitan ang karapatan ng mamamayan sa pagtitipon at pagpapahayag.

Ngunit hindi kailanman naging tahimik ang bayan.

Sa mga selda kung saan sinubukang ikulong ang tinig, may mga tinig na lalong lumakas. Sa mga pahinang tinangkang burahin, may mga salaysay na muling isinulat. Sa mga lansangang nilagyan ng takot, may mga paa pa ring humakbang.

At sa loob ng mga pamantasan, hindi naging hiwalay ang pag-aaral sa pakikibaka. Ang mga Iskolar ng Bayan ay hindi lamang nakaupo sa silid-aralan upang magbasa ng kasaysayan, marami sa kanila ang naging bahagi ng mismong kasaysayang kanilang pinag-aaralan. Sa PUP, nananatiling buhay ang diwa ng mga kabataang nanindigan na ang edukasyon ay hindi lamang para sa pansariling pag-unlad, kundi sandata upang maunawaan, hamunin, at baguhin ang lipunan.

Kaya sa bawat Setyembre 21, hindi lamang tayo lumilingon.

Limang dekada at apat na taon na ang nakalipas matapos iproklama ng Diktador na si Marcos Sr. ang Martial Law sa Pilipinas, isang bangungot sa lahat ng Pilipino kung saan apak na apak ang bawat sektor. Sa loob diktadurya ni Marcos, lantad ang korapsyon at kawalan ng karapatan, dumanak ang dugo ng mga nasa ibaba, at ang artes ay naghinagpis.

Malaki ang naging papel ng mga Iskolar ng Bayan ng PUP sa laban kontra diktadurya ni Marcos Sr. Hanggang sa ngayon, patuloy nating bitbit ang alab ng kabayanihan ng mga martir ng bayan na inalay ang sarili para pag-aralan ang lipunan at palayain ang sambayanan tungo sa kaunlaran.

Sa panahon ngayon, tayo ay nasa ilalim ng isang panibagong Marcosโ€”ibang mukha ngunit iisa ang layunin: ang ibaon sa limot ang nakaraan, magpakatuta sa imperyalisyang US, itulak ang kawalan ng hustisya sa mga mamamayan, at maging hari ng korapsyon.

Gayunpaman, patuloy ang mga Artista ng Bayan na magpapamulat sa naging danas ng mga nauna sa atin. Hangga't narito ang ating diwa, hindi mababaon sa limot ang naging masalimuot na kwento sa loob ng Batas Militar. Hangga't patuloy ang pagmamaliit sa sambayang Pilipino, tuloy-tuloy ang paglikha para makamit ang tunay na kalayaan, katarungan, at demokrasyang matagal na nating nilalaban.

It has been over a year since the news broke of the DPWH Flood Control Scandal. Despite this there have been very few officials arrested with none having been charged for their crimes. Additionally, the ongoing impeachment trial for Vice President Sara Duterte has been treated less as a means of enforcing constitutional mandates and rather a show of political allegiances.

It is clear to see that corruption runs deep within our nationโ€™s government, from our local officials putting their friends and family in power, to those at the very top stealing millions from the pockets of the Filipino people. Justice is often not brought to those committing these crimes as they have long been able to avoid accountability for their actions.
