UPCWGS GRANT 2027

CALL FOR RESEARCH PROPOSALS: 2027 UPCWGS RESEARCH GRANT

The University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) is now accepting proposals for its 2027 UPCWGS Research Grant. The grant aims to support cutting-edge research on women and gender in the Philippines.

The UPCWGS will award up to PhP100,000 to four (4) research projects on women and gender in the Philippines. Researchers who propose a higher amount than the stated limit will be automatically rejected. The research must be completed within a nine-month period. Researchers will then be given two (2) additional months to prepare a journal article and a policy brief. The journal article will undergo review by the Review of Women’s Studies (RWS), and the researcher must complete any revisions required by RWS according to the journal’s timeline.

Eligibility. The sole researcher, or the project leader of the research team, must be a regular employee of the University of the Philippines (Instructors, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, Professors, and UP contractual). This person must also hold a minimum SG-16.

Application requirements (separate files):
-Accomplished Project Proposal Form
(download & submit: https://tinyurl.com/upcwgsprojprop)
-For research projects without prior ethical clearance, the project proposal must include the application for ethical clearance as part of the project timeline and budget.
-Start date of research should be Jan 1, 2027
-Cover letter signifying interest and summarizing the project proposal. The letter must be addressed to our director Dr. Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran
-Recommendation letter from the project leader’s past or present supervisor
-We will give preference to applicants who submit a writing sample consisting of a published work or a manuscript accepted for publication (with a supporting acceptance letter), such as a peer-reviewed academic or journal article, book chapter, or monograph (excluding theses and dissertations). Preference will also be given to applicants who are lead or sole authors of the submitted work. Applications that demonstrate strong alignment with the thematic and methodological concerns of the UPCWGS Review of Women’s Studies will receive priority consideration.

Selection criteria. Research proposals will be evaluated based on: timeliness and relevance of the topic, creativity of approach, methodological soundness, contribution to knowledge, potential social impact, and effectiveness of writing style.

Terms and conditions. Awarded projects will receive an initial outlay of 20% of the grant around the start of the project. The remaining funds will be released in four tranches upon submission of three progress reports, one journal article for publication in the Review of Women’s Studies together with one policy brief. Total grant budget must follow the DBM Budget Circular No. 2007-2 (as applied by COA in audit), which says that the total honoraria received by a government employee for special projects shall not exceed 25% of the employee’s annual basic salary, unless otherwise authorized by law. The grant proceeds will be treated as honoraria and deposited to the project leader’s account.

UPM CGWS Team goes to La Salle Green Hills! 💜💚

The Center for Gender and Women’s Studies (CGWS) would like to extend its sincerest gratitude to La Salle Green Hills for inviting the Center to facilitate a discussion on “Gender Sensitivity in Education: Creating Safe and Inclusive Learning Environments” for its teachers and educators.

We are honored to have had our Director, Prof. Mary Dorothy dL. Jose, serve as the Resource Speaker for this session. Through insightful discussions and interactive exchanges, participants explored the importance of gender sensitivity in fostering respectful and inclusive educational spaces where all learners can thrive regardless of their s*x, gender identity, gender expression, or s*xual orientation. The session emphasized that creating safe and inclusive learning environments is a shared responsibility among educators, administrators, and the entire school community. By recognizing unconscious biases, promoting inclusive language and practices, and upholding the dignity and rights of every learner, schools can contribute to a culture of respect, belonging, and academic success.

CGWS remains committed to advancing gender equality and inclusivity through education, capacity-building, and collaboration with partner institutions. We thank La Salle Green Hills for its dedication to fostering gender-responsive education and for providing a platform to strengthen awareness and understanding of these important issues.

Together, we continue to build learning environments where diversity is valued, equity is promoted, and every individual is empowered to reach their full potential. 🌈✨

The College of Arts and Sciences joins communities around the world in celebrating Pride Month, recognizing the diversity and richness of human experiences and reaffirming our commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and supportive academic community for all.

As part of this celebration and in line with our continuing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the Department of Behavioral Sciences, through the Graduate Program in Health Policy Studies (Health Social Science), in partnership with the Office of the Gender Program of the College of Arts and Sciences, will co-host the online forum “The Right to Care Act: Advancing Inclusive Health and Social Protection in the Philippines” this June (details will be announced soon).

The forum aims to provide a platform for meaningful discussions on the proposed Right to Care Act and its potential role in advancing the rights and welfare of LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families in the Philippines. Specifically, the discussion will examine how the proposed legislation seeks to uphold the right of individuals to designate their chosen caregivers and decision-makers, regardless of s*xual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or family structure, particularly in matters involving healthcare, medical decision-making, and access to social protection.

As LGBTQIA+ communities face persistent barriers to securing equitable healthcare, legal recognition, and supportive social systems, the forum will also explore the broader social, legal, and public health implications of the proposed measure. By bringing together scholars, advocates, policymakers, health professionals, and members of civil society, the event seeks to foster informed dialogue on inclusive care systems, human rights, and policy reforms that contribute to a more compassionate, inclusive, and equitable Philippine society.

Through this initiative, the College of Arts and Sciences reaffirms its support for evidence-based policymaking, social justice, and the promotion of human dignity for all, in the spirit of Pride Month and beyond.

: On April 30, 1937, Filipino women won the right of suffrage through a herstoric national plebiscite, with 447,725 (90%) voting “Yes,” surpassing the required 300,000 votes.

To honor this milestone and sustain its democratic spirit, a day was set aside for Filipino women to renew their advocacy and commitment to clean, honest, and free elections and to pursue these efforts with greater zeal. In 1984, Proclamation No. 2346 declared April 30 of every year as Woman Suffrage Day to encourage continued advocacy for electoral integrity.

As we mark the 89th anniversary of this milestone, we are reminded that while women have gained the right to vote, the work toward true gender equality continues—especially in ensuring more women are empowered and represented in decision-making spaces. There can be no full democracy if half of the population remains underrepresented.

To all Filipino voters, especially women: our foremothers fought for and won this right—let us continue to use it responsibly. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. Let us choose leaders who are guided by competence, integrity, and a strong commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Let us exercise this right freely, wisely, and meaningfully.
