On this day in 1719, one of the most shocking and violent political betrayals in Philippine colonial history unfolded inside Intramuros:

Upon arriving in Manila in 1717, Governor Bustamante was determined to clean up systemic corruption and enforce fiscal discipline. He discovered that high-ranking elites and religious orders owed the Spanish Crown over โฑ700,000 in unpaid debts. His aggressive audits and crackdowns quickly alienated the Manila elite.
The standoff reached a breaking point over the ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ when a official carrying sensitive debt ledgers fled to the Manila Cathedral. Refusing to let tax evaders hide behind canon law, Bustamante sent soldiers into the cathedral, eventually escalating the feud by arresting Archbishop Francisco de la Cuesta and locking him in Fort Santiago.

On the morning of October 11, an enraged mob carrying crucifixes and weapons marched on the Palacio del Gobernador shouting "๐๐ผ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต!" Bustamante stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, armed with a sword and a misfiring flintlock pistol. The mob swarmed the stairsโBustamante was brutally struck down, and his military aide son, Jose, was killed while rushing to defend his father.

Following the double murder:
โข Archbishop Cuesta was freed from prison and installed as temporary Governor-General.
โข All audits were halted, and no one was ever brought to justice for the killings.
โข The tragedy exposed the absolute dominance of monastic power in 18th-century Philippinesโa turning point immortalized in Fรฉlix Resurrecciรณn Hidalgo's famous 19th-century masterpiece, ๐๐น ๐๐๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ผ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น ๐๐ผ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐๐๐๐ฎ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ฒ.
