What does it really take for a Filipino family to live a decent life?
A paycheck may cover the essentials today, but a Family Living Wage asks a bigger question: Is a familyโs income enough not only to survive, but to live with dignity and prepare for tomorrow?
A Family Living Wage refers to the level of income needed by a working family to maintain a decent and sustainable standard of living. It considers the everyday realities of a householdโfood and nutrition, housing, electricity and water, transportation, healthcare, education, clothing, communication, personal needs, and even savings or funds for unexpected emergencies.
This is different from the minimum wage, which serves as the legally mandated wage floor. While minimum wage provides basic protection for workers, a living wage looks at the broader needs of workers and their families and the actual cost of achieving a decent quality of life.
It is also important to understand that a Family Living Wage is not the same as the poverty threshold. The poverty threshold represents the minimum income needed to meet basic food and non-food needs. A living wage goes beyond this minimum by considering what families need to live decently, sustainably, and with greater financial security.
For Filipino workers, wages are more than numbers on a payslip. They determine whether a family can put nutritious food on the table, keep children in school, access healthcare when needed, pay household bills, travel to work, and have something set aside for emergencies.
As the cost of essential goods and services continues to affect Filipino households, the conversation on fair and adequate wages becomes increasingly important.
A decent standard of living should not remain an aspiration that hardworking families can only dream of. It should be part of the goal of policies that promote decent work, fair compensation, stronger social protection, and inclusive economic growth.
Because every worker deserves a wage that recognizes not only the value of their work, but also the needs, dignity, and future of the family they support.
