Emotions are an essential part of growing up. They shape how children understand themselves, connect with others, and navigate the world around them. Yet, learning to recognize and express these emotions is a journey that takes patience, understanding, and guidance.

This ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐ฐ๐ž๐ž๐ค ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐Ž๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐›๐ž๐ซ, we are reminded that understanding is a step toward breaking stigma. ๐Ž๐‚๐ƒ ๐€๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐–๐ž๐ž๐ค calls us to challenge the misconceptions surrounding Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Progress means little if our perceptions remain clouded by stereotypes. OCD is not simply being a perfectionist, overly neat, or highly organized. It involves distressing, intrusive thoughts known as obsessions and repetitive behaviors or mental acts called compulsions. Although compulsions may provide temporary relief, they reinforce a cycle of distress that can consume a person's time and energy.

In the Philippines, people with OCD are often dismissed as โ€œmaarteโ€ or โ€œpraning,โ€ causing some to hide their symptoms and suffer in silence. These misconceptions overlook the exhausting struggles that may remain unseen by others.

May this week be a step toward challenging harmful assumptions and fostering compassion for those living with OCD. By understanding their experiences beyond common stereotypes, we can help create a more supportive environment for proper diagnosis and healing.

On October 10, we observe ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐Œ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ฅ ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ, a reminder that mental health awareness must go beyond recognizing struggles. It also means understanding the barriers that prevent people from seeking help and creating spaces where they feel safe enough to speak up.

In the Philippines, โ€œokay langโ€ may be more than a simple response. Family and peer expectations, fear of judgment, and the pressure to remain strong can make it difficult for individuals to express what they are going through. Limited financial resources, access to mental health services, and the shortage of mental health professionals and facilities can make seeking support even more challenging.

Although conversations about mental health have become more visible, awareness alone is not always enough. Understanding the cultural experiences and struggles of others allows us to offer support without assumptions and listen without judgment.

Together, let us create a space where people feel safe to speak honestly about their mental health. Let us look beyond โ€œokay langโ€ and remember that sometimes, what a person needs most is to be heard and understood.
