📣FEATURED STUDENT JOURNAL ARTICLE📣

We feature the study of Eleanor Anne Donhito (BFA 2A) entitled:

“FYPNOSIS: A Qualitative Research with Gen Z TikTok Users on Algorithmic Intimacy, Meme Resistance, and Autonomy”

In this study, Donhito argues that TikTok’s hyper-personalized algorithm creates a form of algorithmic intimacy, where users feel that the platform closely understands their behaviors, preferences, and interests. While this personalization increases engagement and convenience, it also produces feelings of discomfort and perceived surveillance among Gen Z users.

Through qualitative interviews with TikTok users in Metro Manila, the study further reveals how memes and humor function as forms of subtle resistance and critique. Donhito argues that users are not passive consumers of digital advertising, but active participants who reinterpret and negotiate personalized content through online humor, shared experiences, and feed-management practices.

The research ultimately highlights how Gen Z navigates algorithm-driven environments through awareness, creativity, and negotiated autonomy, offering insights relevant to digital marketing, social media studies, audience behavior, and contemporary visual culture.

📣FEATURED STUDENT JOURNAL ARTICLE📣

We feature the study of Michaela Angela Matira (BFA 2B) entitled:

“LA-VALUE: The Semiotic Analysis in Spatial Display Aesthetics of Labubu Collectibles in Malls”

In this study, Matira argues that the perceived value of Labubu collectibles is shaped not only by the product itself, but also by how it is visually presented within mall spaces. Focusing on lighting, arrangement, hierarchy, and display composition, the research examines how spatial aesthetics influence audience interpretation and engagement.

Through semiotic analysis, observation, visual documentation, and participant surveys conducted in SM Mall of Asia and SM North EDSA, the study reveals that display aesthetics communicate playfulness, guide viewer attention, strengthen visual appeal, and create a sense of rarity around the collectibles.

Matira further contends that mall displays function as semiotic systems that transform ordinary retail presentation into meaningful visual experiences, increasing audience interest and perceived aesthetic value.

The study offers insights relevant to visual merchandising, retail design, branding, and spatial communication in contemporary consumer culture.

📣FEATURED STUDENT JOURNAL ARTICLE📣

We feature the study of Hillary Cindy R. Lira (BFA 2A) entitled:

“CTRL+SEE: Navigating Visual Overload, Attention, and Interpretation in Manila’s Urban Visual Culture”

In this study, Lira argues that meaning within Manila’s visually crowded urban spaces is shaped through selective attention and perceptual filtering. Focusing on areas such as Quiapo, Divisoria, Recto, and Taft Avenue, she examines how people navigate environments saturated with advertisements, posters, signage, and competing visual materials.

Through field observation, photographic documentation, and interviews, the study shows that individuals tend to notice visuals that are either personally relevant or visually dominant, while repetitive and familiar images gradually fade into the background through repeated exposure.

Lira further argues that despite being perceived as chaotic and overwhelming, these visually dense environments also contribute to the cultural identity and lived experience of Manila’s urban landscape.

The study offers insights relevant to visual culture, advertising, urban studies, and design practice, particularly in understanding how audiences interpret and respond to overloaded visual environments.

📣FEATURED STUDENT JOURNAL ARTICLE📣

We feature the study of Wilson H. Mangrobang (BFA 2B) entitled:

“LOKO TALAGA: Understanding Meaning and Message Effectiveness Through Filipino Everyday Humor in GIGIL’s Grab Video Advertising Campaigns”

In this study, Mangrobang argues that Filipino everyday humor functions as a powerful narrative strategy in digital advertising. Through the analysis of selected GIGIL-produced Grab advertisements, he shows how relatable experiences, exaggerated situations, and comedic storytelling strengthen audience engagement, emotional connection, and message retention.

The study further contends that humor in advertising is not merely for entertainment, but a communication tool that enhances relatability and makes campaigns more memorable for Filipino audiences.

The research offers valuable insights for advertisers, creatives, and digital marketers developing culturally grounded and audience-centered campaigns in contemporary media spaces.

📣FEATURED STUDENT JOURNAL ARTICLE📣

“NARRASENTIA: A Study of How Lucky Me Advertisement Narrative Structure Creates Emotional Resonance Among Filipino Youth” By: Maria Coleen G. Arevalo - BFA 2A

In this study, Arevalo argues that narrative-driven advertisements operate primarily through emotional construction rather than product-centered persuasion. She positions storytelling as the core mechanism through which Lucky Me commercials generate meaning, with emotional conflict, character relationships, and symbolism shaping audience interpretation.

She further argues that Filipino youth engagement is anchored in relatability—particularly family dynamics and everyday lived experiences—where emotional responses (such as warmth, sadness, discomfort, and surprise) become the main site of meaning-making rather than rational consumption.

Finally, Arevalo contends that cinematic techniques—such as framing, lighting, pacing, and close-up shots—do not merely support the narrative but actively intensify emotional resonance, making advertisements more memorable and affectively persuasive.

The study ultimately positions narrative structure as a key driver of emotional impact in advertising, especially within culturally grounded Filipino media contexts.
