Missed a chance to experience the once-in-a-lifetime seminar journey to live your aviation fantasy? Here are 3 insightful pointers we learned from last Friday during The Language of Flight: Introduction to Aviation Linguistics by Dr. Ramsey Ferrer!

Pilots and controllers don’t just exchange spy codes to each other in walkie-talkies using movie agent lingo—-they use aviation communication! It is the safety protocol flight professionals use to convey precise messages safely and efficiently! And with this knowledge, aviation linguistics is the interdisciplinary study of the said language within aviation and aeronautical contexts.

Aviation phraseology is generally meant to be standardized, concise and procedural to ensure accuracy in a high stakes environment compared to the plain language which is flexible, content-dependent and creative! However phraseology is limited by design so it cannot be “completely” standardized.

Despite the recent establishment of English being the official primary language of aviation communication per ICAO, it comes in many forms, flavors and styles! Practitioners follow that the air-grand radiotelephony communication can be conducted in the language normally used by the station in the ground. This introduces the interesting topic of variability!

Lastly, studying the world of Aviation Linguistics opens up opportunities not limited to operating a plane! Linguistic ecosystem include:

-Arc Pilot communications
-Aviation Discourse
-ESP/ English Specific Purposes
-World Englishes
-Applied Corpus Linguistics and more!

This impactful session would not have been possible without our esteemed professor and speaker. We extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Ramsey Ferrer for spending his time to impart his knowledge, and to Ms. Elaine Masangya for her fielding and unwavering support.

Whether you're aiming for the cockpit or exploring the linguistic systems behind flight safety, there's always more to learn. Stay tuned to our page for upcoming events! 💎🌟

THE NU GUILD OF ENGLISH MAJORS PRESENTS: ABELS ABOVE AND BEYOND ✈️🌐

The Guild of English Majors (GEMs) cordially invites the academic community of AB English Language Studies to an insightful lecture entitled "ABELS Above and Beyond: Aviation Linguistics Discussion." Join us as we navigate the intersection of language and aviation and discover how linguistics takes flight in one of the world’s most communication-dependent industries on Friday, September 11, 2026, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM at Room 402, 4th Floor, NU Annex Building 1.

Guiding us through this high-level discussion is our esteemed guest speaker, Dr. Ramsey S. Ferrer, Associate Professor at the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences, National Aviation Academy of the Philippines (NAAP). He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from De La Salle University, where his dissertation Aviation Corpus of English–Philippines (ACE-PHI) received the Outstanding Dissertation Award. His work has established pioneering research in aviation linguistics in the Philippines, particularly through the development of the Aviation Corpus of English–Philippines (ACE-PHI), the country’s first large-scale and systematic corpus of aeronautical communication. He also completed advanced training at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Vancouver, Canada.

Furthermore, Dr. Ferrer is deeply involved in international aviation communication, working with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and serving as an active member of the International Civil Aviation English Association (ICAEA). His research on Aviation English has led to numerous publications, and he authored the foreword for English for Aeronautical Communication by Prof. Anna Borowska—solidifying his role as a leading voice in aviation linguistics.

Buckle up and get ready for a discussion that takes language studies above and beyond! ✈️🌟

: Last Wednesday was fun for the books! The caps were thrown, and their next chapters have officially begun. Here’s a quick look at how we celebrated. 🎓

Last September 2, 2026, we officially celebrated the graduation ceremony for our batch of leaders and achievers at the SMX Convention Center.

The event was a memorable success, made possible through the unwavering guidance and support of our ABELS Program Chair, Ms. Domelyn S. Adolfo. We were also deeply honored to welcome back Atty. Robbie Santos (ABELS Class of 2018) as our commencement speaker. His return to share insights and inspire the next wave of graduates served as a powerful reminder of where this degree can take us.

To our new alumni, congratulations! We are incredibly proud of your journey, and we cannot wait to see the impact you will make next.
