The PUP Gender Equity, Diversity, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Office sincerely thanks the offices and members of the PUP community who generously donated sanitary napkins, tampons, and other menstrual hygiene products in support of our menstrual health initiative. We extend our appreciation to the Office of the President, Extension Management Office, Research Management and Intellectual Property Office, Institutional Quality Management Office, and the Research Institute for Human and Social Development, as well as members of the GEDSI Office, for their valuable contributions.

Through this initiative, every Juana within the PUP community is encouraged to avail of ๐—™๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—˜ ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€ at the ๐—š๐—˜๐——๐—ฆ๐—œ ๐—ข๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ, ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ต ๐—ช๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฅ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—บ 409, ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ. This effort aims to ensure that essential menstrual hygiene products are readily available for those who may need them while on campus.

We are also still accepting donations of sanitary napkins, tampons, and other menstrual hygiene products. Those who wish to contribute may drop off their donations at the PUP GEDSI Office, and any form of support will greatly help us continue providing accessible menstrual health resources within the PUP community.

PRESS RELEASE | 08 MARCH 2026

OFFICIAL STATEMENT OF THE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES STUDENT COUNCIL COMMISSION ON STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND ACCREDITATION (PUP SC COSOA) IN LIGHT OF INTERNATIONAL WOMENโ€™S MONTH AND INTERNATIONAL WOMENโ€™S DAY

The celebration of International Women's Day today not only commemorates women's achievements but also serves as a reminder of the inequalities that continue to persist in our society.

Beyond this celebration, we demand liberation.

To celebrate is to resist. For the PUP Student Council Commission on Student Organizations and Accreditation (PUP SC COSOA), International Womenโ€™s Day is not a day for loud yet empty platitudes or gestures, but a day of reckoning, solidarity, and genuine liberation.

Recently, the halls of Congress became a stage for blatant misogynistic remarks. Quezon City 4th District Representative Jesus โ€œBongโ€ Suntay, in an attempt to illustrate a legal point, used actress-host Anne Curtis in a scenario in which he supposedly spots her at a mall and harbors โ€œimaginaryโ€ predatory desires. While framed as a hypothetical illustration, invoking a real woman in a sexualized and predatory narrative reinforces harmful attitudes toward women and normalizes the objectification they continue to face.

We state this clearly: this was not a mere hypothetical illustration but a reductive, degrading, and insulting act of sexual objectification. To say that one should โ€œtake it as a complimentโ€ reflects how women continue to be subject to normalized misogyny. And to encounter these remarks within spaces where laws meant to safeguard and protect women are written and discussed is beyond disappointing. We must remember that Suntayโ€™s โ€œnag-initโ€ remark is not an isolated case; this is something every Filipina has to deal with daily in the streets, workplaces, and sometimes even in their homes. This reveals a glaring symptom of a deeper social disease, fueled by silence or state-sponsored apathy that terrorizes every Filipina.

We refuse to turn a blind eye to this grim reality. Across the Philippines, thousands of cases of violence against women continue to be reported every year, reflecting how deeply entrenched gender-based violence remains. From violence within homes to exploitation in workplaces and abroad, gendered economic exploitation and the persistent erosion of a womanโ€™s right to her own dignity remain pressing realities.

To celebrate women of all walks of life including those who identify as women during this International Womenโ€™s Month, is to confront the uncomfortable and urgent truths of our society. As Filipinos, it is upon us to break the chains that society has so eagerly imposed on women throughout our history. Only through our resistance towards these injustices can we forge a better society where women are truly free to live with dignity, safety, and equal opportunityโ€”not bound by the deeply rooted patriarchal structures shaped throughout millennia.

The PUP SC COSOA stands with and for Anne Curtis, all women who can see themselves in her situation, and with those who refuse to condone acts of misogyny and continue to demand safe spaces, security, and true autonomy.

We call on institutions, public officials, and communities to actively uphold respect for women and advance policies that ensure their safety, dignity, and equal participation in society. Women should be given spaces where they are empowered to lead, speak, and partake in shaping the future of society. We believe that the fight for genuine female representation and equality must translate into meaningful action that dismantles the system that continues to marginalize women.

Let us move beyond simple greetings and discuss the still-present struggles that women face. The struggle for respect for womenโ€™s rights is inseparable from the broader struggle for justice, equality, and genuine democracy. We are one in the fight for a world where dignity is the baseline, not the exception.

Misogyny dressed in the garb of a 'joke' is still, at its core, misogyny.

Ang babae ay babae, kailanman ay hindi magiging babae lang. Ang kababaihan ang pundasyon ng ating lipunanโ€”mga lider, manggagawa, iskolar, at tagapagtaguyod ng pagbabago.

For the Filipino people, and for women, we remain.

Ducere est servire.
