HISTORY

The Research Institute for Culture and Language formerly known as the Institute of Social History (ISH) was originally established in 1986 by PUP President Emeritus Dr. Nemesio E. Prudente who also served as its founding director. In 1989, the directorship of the Institute was transferred to Prof. Domingo Castro De Guzman, a Palanca laureate and a faculty member teaching philosophy and li

terature in the now defunct College of Arts and Sciences. De Guzman’s directorship ended with the retirement of Dr. Prudente. After Dr. Prudente’s term, the Institute was put on hold. It was revived three years after when Dr. Dante G. Guevarra assumed the presidency of the University in 2005. ISH was then merged with the Research Institute for Politics and Economics or RIPE. The combined Institutes ended operation in 2012, paving the way for a new Institute with a much broader but well defined scope, the Institute for Cultural Studies. From 2012 to October 2016, the Institute was supervised and headed by Prof. Rivas of the College of Arts and Letters. Associate Prof. Joseph Reylan Viray, also a faculty member of the College of Arts and Letters, serves as Director of the Institute. it was renamed into Institute for Culture and Language Studies (ICLS) during the latter period of the administration of the University President Dr. Emanuel C. de Guzman. When Dr. Manuel M. Muhi became president of the University, the Institute was again renamed as the Research Institute for Culture and Language (RICL). RICL is the current name of the Institute and Associate Prof. Viray remains its director. Under the RICL wings are five research centers: the Center for Humanities and Philosophy, Center for Philippine Studies, Center for Creative Writing, the Center for Language and Literature, and Center for Translation

The Institute fosters research and/or research-based and workshop-led outputs and activities across divisional and disciplinary boundaries. The Institute promotes and engages with interpretative (or hermeneutic), historical, social and political researches as well as theoretical works in the Arts and allied disciplines. The RICL produces the following journals and publications: Mabini Review and the Entrada Journal.

Sa ating paggunita sa ika-100 anibersaryo ng kapanganakan ni Dr. Nemesio E. Prudente—edukador, manunulat, at matapang na lingkod-bayan—iniimbitahan ang lahat na makiisa at tunghayan ang eksibit na pinamagatang “Sudlanan ng Kasaysayan: An Exhibit of PUP’s Literary and Cultural Narratives” bilang pagbibigay-pugay sa mga pamana ng panulat, kultura, at pakikibaka sa loob ng Sinta.

Handog ng ABLCS 4-1, 4-2, at 4-3, kasama ang Research Institute for Culture and Language (RICL), Center for Philippine Studies (CPS), at University Center for Culture and the Arts (UCCA), tampok sa eksibit na ito ang mga akdang pampanitikan, sining, arkibo, at legasiya ng mga dakilang manunulat ng PUP na nangahas gamitin ang kanilang panulat bilang sandata upang labanan ang panunupil at opresyon ng estado mula noon hanggang ngayon.

Sa pamamagitan ng mga arkibo, akdang pampanitikan, dokumentong historikal, at malikhaing instalasyon, muling bubuuin ang kolektibong alaala ng mga manunulat at alagad ng sining na nagsilbing tinig ng mamamayan sa iba’t ibang yugto ng kasaysayan.

Gaganapin ang eksibit mula ika-26 hanggang ika-30 ng Mayo 2026 sa South Wing, 4th Floor Bridge, PUP Main Campus.

Halina’t sama-sama nating paliyabin ang diwa ng mapagpalayang edukasyon at ipagpatuloy ang apoy ng paglilingkod at paglaban. ✊🏻🔥

𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧

This National Heritage Month 2026, the Chief of the PUP Center for Museology and Heritage Studies, Dr. Romeo P. Peña, continues his commitment to heritage documentation and cultural scholarship through his latest publication:

“REBYU NG TAYABAS: DOCUMENTING HERITAGE”

In this publication, Dr. Peña reviews the book Tayabas: Documenting Heritage written by Ryan Palad, highlighting its contribution to Philippine heritage studies.

This National Heritage Month 2026, with the theme “Roots and Horizons: Our Shared Heritage, Our Collective Future,” the PUP Center for Museology and Heritage Studies (CMHS), through the Research Institute for Culture and Language (RICL), will start its University-Funded Research (UFR) project titled:

“World Cultural Heritage in the Philippines: Initiatives and Challenges on Heritage Preservation and Protection / Pandaigdigang Pamanang Kultural sa Pilipinas: Mga Inisyatiba at Hamon sa Pagpapanatili at Pagprotekta sa Pamana.”

This project responds to the core mandate of CMHS as a research center: to produce, present/disseminate and publish research related to heritage studies.

We will provide updates regarding the development and status of this research.

Sa araw na ito, muli nating alalahanin ang halaga ng bawat manggagawa, mga taong araw-araw na nagsasakripisyo ng oras, at lakas, upang maitaguyod ang pamilya at mapaunlad ang pangangailangan ng ating lipunan.

Nawa’y magsilbi rin itong paalala na ang bawat manggagawa ay hindi lamang dapat kilalanin sa kanilang ambag, kundi tratuhin din nang may sapat na respeto, dignidad, at pagpapahalaga. Sapagkat sa likod ng bawat tagumpay ng lipunan ay mga manggagawang may tunay na pakinabang, halaga, at karapat-dapat na pagkilala. ✊🏼

Inihahandog ng PUP University Center for Culture and the Arts ang isang maikling produksyon mula sa FilmBayan PUP para sa pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Panitikang Pambansa. Tampok sa produksyong ito ang ilang piling mga akda mula sa mga manunulat na nagmula sa Sintang Paaralan bilang estudyante man o edukador.

Ang produksyon ay halaw mula sa lektura ni Prop. Jomar Adaya hinggil sa Tradisyong Pampanitikan ng PUP.

Pinasasalamatan ng Filmbayan ang Center for Creative Writing - PUP, PUP Center for Philippine Studies, at mga magaaral mula sa PUP Department of Performing Arts na nakatuwang sa pagbubuo ng produksyong ito.
