PNU - Society for the Advancement of Physics Education

PNU - Society for the Advancement of Physics Education The PNU - Society for the Advancement of Physics Education is an organization aiming for the development of Science Education in the Philippines.

The Society for the Advancement of Physics Education is a former department-based organization which became a program-based organization where all members are physics majors. In its early years, this was a stand-alone organization but some time later until the present, it has become a member of SMPP or Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Pagpapaunlad ng Pisika where it collaborates with other physics orga

nizations from other schools and universities to achieve the common goal which is to promote and develop physics in the country.

Wazzup Physics majors!

We finally did it. The drip has been quantified πŸ₯΅.

Look uniformly good while suffering through problem sets with our official ID lace and polo shirt.

Presenting our official ID lace and polo shirt layoutsβ€”because nothing says β€œfuture physicist” like looking uniformly good while suffering through problem sets.

Oo na, alam namin… medyo late. Like β€œend-of-school-year, almost-final-exam, where-was-this-all-sem” late 😭.

But hey, in true physics fashion, time is relativeβ€”so technically, we’re right on schedule.

MULA SA PAMANTASAN, TUNGO SA PAMAYANAN! 🌱✨

Last month, PNU SAPE held an outreach program on a community in Bagong Silangan, Quezon City. Fun science activities, games, and discussion were held in driving the children's interest in learning Science. Special thanks to the Religious of the Good Shepherd and RTU Bio-Physical Science Club for helping us in realizing this activity.

Here are some snaps from the last month's activity!

We Juan! Another Victory for Nuclear Science in the Philippines

Last December 11-12, 2025, the 4th Philippine Nuclear Research and Development Conference was launched at the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute. With researchers, scientists and decision-makers across the country came together, they explored the most recent breakthroughs and developments that can revolutionize our nation with the power of nuclear science.

The occasion has commenced with the theme β€œNuclear Science, Technology and Innovation: Driving a Resilient, Sustainable and Secure Future”. It was celebrated during the 53rd Atomic Energy Week. Notable keynote speakers were present and shared valuable insights. Dr. Angel T. Bautista’s lecture is on overview of nuclear fuel cycle. Dr. Jordan F. Madrid also provided a discourse on harnessing ionizing technology for sustainable plastic recycling. Lastly, Dr. Ike Dimayuga explored the CANDU (Canada Deuterium Uranium) research and development. Aside from the remarkable speakers, scientists and researchers from the different places in the Philippines were also able to share their development. One of the particular participants is the institution of Philippine Normal University (PNU).

A group of students from IV-23 Bachelor in Science Education with Specialization in Physics of PNU conducted a study entitled, β€œRadiolytic Degradation of Methylene Blue Dye Solutions”. The research explored gamma and electron beam irradiation capabilities in treating dye-containing wastewater. It was authored by Paul Miguel P. Farenas, Karylle Victoria D. Caasi, Mark Erickson S. Calunod and Cloey Juliene C. Magana under the supervision of Dr. Marie Paz E. Morales of Philippine Normal University, Dr. Jordan F. Madrid of Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), and Ludhovik Luiz B. Madrid of PNRI and Science Education Institute of Taguig. The paper was presented in the conference by Mr. Farenas and Ms. Caasi, highlighting the incorporation between irradiation and currently existing frameworks on sanitation to advocate environmental goals that can promote sustainable water use within academic communities.

The event has been an enriching avenue for the Filipino people to explore the wonders of limitless applications of nuclear science to our education, environment and the citizens of the country. We Juan, a victory for the advancement of nuclear science research and development!

Last October 28, 2025, the Society for the Advancement of Physics Education (SAPE) along with the Faculty of Science, Technology, and Mathematics - Council of Presidents (FSTeM - CoP) spearheaded the stargazing activity with the theme β€œGaze & Amaze: A Night with the Stars”. With the help of Philippine Astronomical Society, Inc., a telescope viewing became possible, allowing the PNUans to better experience the cosmos. Although the weather did not entirely coincide with the activity - clouds covering the night sky for most of the time - the curiosity of the PNUans to learn astronomy still shined brightly like the stars at night.

Lectures were also held by two alumni of the Philippine Normal University. Ms. Mikaela De Jesus, a graduate student at De La Salle University under DOST-ASTHRDP, talked about the basics parts of telescopes while Mr. Khristian Dimacali, the Education Committee Head of the Philippine Astronomical Society, Inc., shared meaningful discourse on the development of astronomy education.
