๐Ÿงฌ October is here and itโ€™s time to look beyond the plate. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

What if understanding your genes, gut microbiome, metabolism, and other biological โ€œOMICsโ€ could help us better understand how nutrition can be tailored to the individual?

The Department of Nutrition warmly invites everyone to the second offering of the Short Course on OMICs of Precision Nutrition.

This isn't just another seminar. This is where we learn how genomics, metabolomics, gut microbiome, and other -OMICs can create a diet plan that's as unique as your DNA. It is designed for health professionals to delve into the integration of multi-omics technologies to develop truly individualized dietary interventions. We're talking about personalized food recommendations powered by cutting-edge science!

โœจ Three days. Cutting-edge science. One emerging field transforming nutrition.โœจ

The future of nutrition is becoming more preciseโ€”and it starts with understanding the OMICs.

Join us as in "Understanding the Food Environment for Better Public Health", a graduate seminar organized by the PHN 297.1 class, as we explore the food environment around us. From what food labels tell us, to what we see on supermarket shelves, and whether a healthy diet is within reach for Filipino families.

The Department of Nutrition is proud to share that its Collective Mentorship Program (CMP) has been officially approved under the University of the Philippines' strategic platform for advancing graduate education, research, and public service.

The program brings together two exciting initiatives: (1) the Public Health Nutrition and Wellbeing Innovation Program, led by Dr. Kim Leonard G. Dela Luna, and (2) the Precision Nutrition Research and Innovation Program (PNRIP), led by Dr. Vanessa Joy A. Timoteo-Garcia. Both are designed to strengthen research collaboration, support emerging scholars, and promote innovation across disciplines.

Through the CMP, the Department hopes to build a sustainable culture of mentorship and excellence, one that will benefit not only our students but also the Filipino people, by turning research into meaningful policies and programs for better nutrition and health.

Congratulations, DON!

The Intensive Training Course on Assessment of Nutritional Status (ITCANS) wrapped up on July 30, 2026, after three incredible days of learning, connection, and skill-building in the cool and vibrant City of Pines!

From insightful lectures to hands-on workshops, participants immersed themselves in everything from anthropometric and biochemical assessment to dietary evaluation methods, clinical assessment, epidemiologic study designs, and even a peek into nutrigenomics.

We are endlessly grateful to our enthusiastic participants for making this course truly special. Your energy and commitment remind us why we do what we do.

And to our future participants, we are already cooking up more exciting learning opportunities for the coming semesters. So keep your eyes peeled and your calendars ready. See you at the next one!

The third day of the Intensive Training Course on Assessment of Nutritional Status (ITCANS) was marked by a series of engaging lectures and hands-on workshops. The morning began with a Workshop on the Multiple Pass 24-Hour Food Recall led by Dr. Kim Leonard Dela Luna, followed by a lecture on the Evaluation of Nutrient Intake and Possible Sources of Error in Dietary Assessment delivered by Prof. Denniese Sy. She also facilitated a Workshop on the Evaluation of Nutrient Intake, allowing participants to apply their learning in a practical setting. Dr. Dela Luna then returned to discuss Measures of Food Security and Ecological Indicators of Nutritional Status Assessment.

The afternoon sessions were equally enriching. Dr. Vanessa Joy Timoteo-Garcia delivered a lecture on Combining Nutritional Status Assessment Methods with Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics, followed by Dr. Dela Luna's session on Defining Nutrition-Related Variables. The day culminated in a Workshop on Developing the Conceptual Framework and Defining Variables, where participants had the opportunity to develop their own conceptual frameworks, synthesizing and applying the knowledge and skills they had gained over the past three days of the course. The session was capped off with a post-test to assess participant learning.

ITCANS 2026 has equipped its participants with new perspectives and practical tools that they can bring back to their respective fields.

The second day of the Intensive Training Course on Assessment of Nutritional Status (ITCANS) proved to be another enriching experience for participants. The morning began with a lecture on Nutrition-Focused Clinical Assessment delivered by Dr. Jeremiah Torrico, followed by a comprehensive session on Methods of Dietary Assessment including Food Recall and FFQ presented by Dr. Kim Leonard Dela Luna. Prof. Denniese Sy then discussed the Use of Figures and Graphs in Nutrition-Related Studies, equipping participants with valuable data visualization skills.

The afternoon sessions were equally engaging. A series of hands-on workshops on Nutrition-Focused Clinical Assessment and Biochemical Assessment, both led by Dr. Torrico, provided participants with practical learning experiences. He also delivered a lecture on Biochemical Assessment to close the day on a productive note.
