UST CTHM Graduates Win Top Research Presenter Award

The University of Santo Tomas – College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (UST-CTHM) once again showcased its excellence in research as two of its recent graduates secured the Top 1 Research Presenter Award at the Student Tourism and Hospitality Education Research Congress (STHERC) 2026 National Congress, organized by the Junior Tourism and Hospitality Management Philippines (JTHMP).

Ms. Ethelle Marian T. Calvez and Ms. Praxene Marie Socorro D. Cortez of Batch 2026 earned the highest recognition for their presentation of the research titled “Pámanguéntu: The Role of Food Storytelling in Transforming Taste to Meaning in Kapampangan Gastro-Tourism Experience.”

Held on September 17, 2026, the national competition brought together the top research presenters from 10 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) representing the NCR, North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao clusters. The winners were recognized during the awarding ceremony on September 19, 2026.

The award-winning study explores how food storytelling enriches the Kapampangan gastro-tourism experience by transforming local dishes from mere culinary offerings into meaningful expressions of culture, heritage, and identity. Through pámanguéntu, or storytelling, the research highlights how visitors’ understanding and appreciation of Kapampangan cuisine can be deepened by the narratives behind its ingredients, preparation methods, traditions, and the people who preserve them.

The research was co-authored by Mr. John Lester B. Sangalang, Ms. Jhamae A. Enriquez, and Mr. Kurt Vincent M. Magtoto, under the mentorship of Asst. Prof. Ma. Concepcion A. Ang, MBA, CHE, CGSP, and Ms. Catherine C. Mondejar, MSTHM.

UST CTHM Welcomes Tourism Stakeholders to the PARTH General Assembly and Writeshop 2026

UST College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (UST CTHM), through UST Sentro Turismo, warmly invites the tourism and hospitality community to participate in the PARTH General Assembly and Writeshop 2026, organized by the Philippine Association of Researchers for Tourism and Hospitality (PARTH).

The University of Santo Tomas–College of Tourism and Hospitality Management proudly congratulates its June 2026 Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management graduates for earning the Top 1 Research Presenters recognition at the Student Tourism and Hospitality Education and Research Congress (STHERC) 2026 NCR Cluster Competition, held virtually on September 10, 2026.

Beyond the Walls: Writing Intramuros’ Next Chapter
Four hundred years in, and it’s just getting started.

The University of Santo Tomas College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, through UST Sentro Turismo, recently met with the Intramuros Administration and Colegio de San Juan de Letran–Intramuros, Manila, to strengthen an academic-industry collaboration for the Destination Marketing Campaign Summit (DMARCS) Philippines 2026. To be held on December 10, 2026, at the Foro de Intramuros, the summit will present integrated marketing communications campaigns designed to strengthen the destination brand, visitor engagement, and heritage appeal of Intramuros, Manila. UST CTHM and Colegio de San Juan de Letran–Intramuros, Manila, extend their sincere appreciation to Atty. Joan M. Padilla, Administrator of the Intramuros Administration, for her support of this meaningful academic and destination-development initiative.

Through this partnership, fourth-year Tourism Management students of UST CTHM enrolled in Destination Management and Marketing will collaborate with Tourism Management students of Colegio de San Juan de Letran–Intramuros, Manila, taking Product Development and Strategic Management in their fourth year and Heritage Tourism in their third year to develop six integrated marketing communications campaigns for Intramuros. The student researchers will conduct data-gathering activities and site visits from October 17 to 19, 2026. Meanwhile, second-year Letran Tourism Management students taking Travel and Tour Management will collaborate with the UST CTHM third-year Tourism Management student’s Travel Agency Management and Operations class in handling the researchers’ travel arrangements, providing an applied and cross-institutional learning experience.

The meeting brought together the Intramuros Administration team: Rhea Kristine J. Cy, Chief Tourism Operations Officer; Den F. Fenellere, Senior Tourism Operations Officer; Justine Manuele S. A Future Carved in Heritage: The Paete Community and UST CTHM Shape Tomorrow Together

Last September 1, 2026, the University of Santo Tomas College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (UST CTHM), through UST Sentro Turismo, has formally entered into a one-year collaboration with the Municipal Government of Paete, Laguna, and the Paete Historical and Cultural Heritage Foundation, Inc. Formalized through Pambungad, the Official Partnership Agreement, the collaboration unites the academe, local government, heritage advocates, and the community in generating evidence-based inputs for tourism planning, policy formulation, destination management, and decision-making. At its heart is a shared commitment to preserve, promote, and sustainably develop Paete’s cultural, historical, and artistic heritage.

Through the Tourism Policy, Planning and Development course, Third Year Tourism Management students will develop a Tourism Development Plan for Paete, Laguna, the partnership’s principal deliverable. From November 10 to 12, students will conduct site and attraction assessments, community-based data gathering, and stakeholder consultations to gain a deeper understanding of Paete’s tourism resources, opportunities, and priority needs. Their findings will inform heritage-responsive recommendations and practical strategies that protect Paete’s distinct cultural assets, create meaningful visitor experiences, and support sustained tourism growth. The initiative will also feature the Paete Cultural Dialogue, organized by the MICE class of the UST Tourism Management Department, while the Travel Agency Management and Operations class will oversee travel arrangements for the field engagement.

The partnership gathering brought together representatives from the Municipal Government of Paete, the Paete Historical and Cultural Heritage Foundation, Inc., and UST CTHM. The Paete LGU was led by Hon. Ronald B. Cosico, Municipal Mayor, and included Hon. Odette F. Sunga, Hon. Brigido Bagayana, and Hon. Florence Jude V. UST Sentro Turismo Conducts Fieldwork and Multi-Sectoral Consultation for San Nicolas’ Sustainable Tourism Plan

UST College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM), through UST Sentro Turismo, conducted fieldwork, site visits, data-gathering activities, and a multi-sectoral focus group discussion in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte on August 24–25, 2026, in support of the municipality’s Sustainable Strategic Tourism Development Plan (SSTDP) 2026–2031.

The activity brought together representatives from the public, social, economic, and environmental sectors to share local perspectives, priority concerns, and development aspirations for San Nicolas. The project team also examined key cultural, heritage, livelihood, and public-space assets, including the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of San Nicolas de Tolentino, Museo San Nicoleño (Buabobuabo), Balay San Nicolas, San Nicolas Town Plaza, Valdez Center, Rangcapan Damili Pottery Shop, Toralba Baldosa Tiles, and the local latero traditions. These consultations and visits will help protect the municipality’s living heritage, create tourism opportunities rooted in local identity, and grow a more sustainable and inclusive destination through collaborative planning. The team was ably assisted by Mr. Richie Cavinta, Municipal Senior Tourism Operations Officer of San Nicolas, Ariadne Geisha Cabel and Jessa Mae Joaquin from the Tourism Office, and also paid a courtesy call to Vice Mayor Hon. Napoleon L. Hernando and the members of the Sangguniang Bayan. The team likewise extends its sincere appreciation to Hon. Edmar Vincent Bonoan, Municipal Mayor of San Nicolas, for supporting this collaborative effort toward a sustainable tourism future for the municipality.

UST CTHM Tourism Management undergraduate researchers recently concluded their field visit in Zumarraga, Samar for their thesis study, "Pagpasa Han (To Pass On): Deciphering the Intergenerational Transmission on Built Heritage Significance—The Case of Buad, Zumarraga, Samar, Philippines.” The research team, Andrei Madamba De Silva, Enrico Golosinda, Gab Cabarles, Illeana Dela Cruz, Kathryn Anne Dones, and Kezhia Geronimo, engaged local leaders and elders, youth and students of Zumarraga National High School, and other key community informants to explore how the cultural and historical significance of Buad, or Arteche Park, is remembered and passed on across generations.

Guided by their adviser, Asst. Prof. Jame Monren T. Mercado, MACHS, CGSP, and accompanied during the data gathering by Mr. John Jerick C. Santos, MLdrshpOrgLrng, CGSP, UST Sentro Turismo Associate for Internal Affairs, the team extends its sincere gratitude to the Municipality of Zumarraga for its generous welcome and support, especially Mayor Rosalito “Lito” Castillo and SB Member Lucien Letaba. UST CTHM Student Researchers Begin Heritage Fieldwork in Tagkawayan, Quezon

The UST College of Tourism and Hospitality Management student research team has commenced fieldwork for “PAMANA in the Riles,” a study exploring the cultural significance and safeguarding of Tagkawayan’s traditional trolleys/skates.

Led by Vivienne Aiyah B. Medina and supervised by Asst. Prof. Jame Monren T. Mercado, MACHS, CGSP, the research team conducted a courtesy call with Municipal Mayor Carlo Eleazar and visited the barangays of Cabugwang, Seguiwan, and Kinatakutan.

The student researchers Althea Cassandra De Guzman, Vivienne Aiyah B. Medina, Florence Gabrielle Y. Nerviol, Kristel Axelle D. Rivera, and Austine Ryan S. Velasco, were accompanied by Ms. Ma. Alyana Loraine Duro, LPT, MSHM, CTHM academic staff and UST Sentro Turismo Associate for Events–Internal.

Through evidence-based research and community stories, the project supports sustainable, community-based tourism while strengthening the partnership of UST CTHM and UST Sentro Turismo with local government units.
