The Arellano University Supreme Student Council โ Manila extends its deepest condolences to the families of those who were killed or wounded in the recent school shootings. These tragedies have caused fear and grief among students, teachers, families, and communities. Schools should be safe spaces for learning, growth, and protectionโnot places where students fear for their lives.
These incidents demand more than sympathyโthey demand a closer look at how school violence is prevented and addressed. School violence must not be framed as a mental health issue alone. While mental health support and school counselors are essential, prevention must also address bullying, access to fi****ms, school climate, family and community conditions, warning behaviors, harmful online spaces, and other factors that may contribute to violence. Stronger research and evidence-based prevention systems are also needed to better understand and prevent school violence.
We call on government authorities and educational institutions to strengthen school safety and student protection systems through effective safeguarding protocols, psychosocial support, early identification of risks, and timely intervention. Accountability must be upheld, and institutional failures must be acknowledged and addressed. The system must be fixed. Institutions must act before more lives are lost.
