Call for Multimodal Annotators

Hi everyone! 👋

We’re looking for CeHCI student annotators who can help us label different modalities in our dyadic social dining dataset (10 videos, each around 45 minutes).

Each video features two participants interacting while sharing a meal, and we will annotate the following:

😊 facial expressions (smile, etc.)
👀 eye gaze
🙂‍↔️ head movement
🧍 posture
✋ hand gestures
🍽️ whether the participant is eating or not
🗣️ dialogue segmentation + sentiment
other basic social signals

This is a great learning opportunity if you want to understand how ground truth datasets are built and try out annotation tools used in Social Signal Processing and Human–AI Interaction research.

💰 Compensation
We will use a per-minute rate of ₱10 per annotated minute of video (after validator approval).

Example:
30-min fully annotated video → ₱300
45-min fully annotated video → ₱450

📝 Workflow
We’ll give a short training/orientation on how to use the annotation tool - ELAN.
Annotators will be assigned videos.
After completion, upperclass researchers will validate the annotations.
Payment is released (via GCash) per validated video.

👥 Who can apply?
CeHCI students who want experience in dataset annotation
Those interested in SSP, HAI, multimodal ML, commensality research
You don’t need prior experience — we will train you!

If you're interested, just reply here or message me (Jiji Cu ) privately.

Slots will be limited since we only have 10 videos for now. 😊

✨ CEHCI Lab Story: Celebrating Courage, Curiosity, and Heart ✨

In these 2 days, four of our students, Neo Almin, Dencel Pineda, Vaughn Sy, and Pulvert Valdez, represented De La Salle University and the Center for Human-Computer Innovations (CeHCI) at the Alibaba Cloud AI Hackathon 2025.

They didn’t bring home a prize.
But they brought something far more important:
they showed up, they stepped out of their comfort zone, and they learned.

This team started as a project group in our EMPATHY class, where their project on culturally adaptive and empathic AI caught attention early on. Back then, joining a hackathon wasn’t even in their plans. But this week, they stood alongside students from top universities, built an end-to-end prototype overnight, and pitched their vision to industry experts.

And that took courage.
A LOT of it.

Even with limited time, they pushed all the way to the finish line.
They explored new tools, picked up Alibaba Cloud technologies on the fly, and experienced the fast, high-pressure world of real-world AI development. Most of all, they showed the kind of steady teamwork, humility, and quiet confidence we hope to see in all our CeHCI students.

We’re proud of what they built…
but we’re even prouder of who they are becoming.

We hope they take home:
confidence in their own abilities,
experience that will shape the way they build in the future,
and connections with AI mentors and industry leaders who can open doors for them later on.

And of course — we’re glad they had fun. 😊
We had fun working with them too.

To Neo, Dencel, Vaughn, and Vert:
Congratulations for taking this leap!
CeHCI is cheering for you. Onwards to the next hackathon - we’ll be ready. 💚✨

And to our other students reading this:
If you’re curious, passionate, or simply want to try something new —
go for it.
We’ll be here to guide you, support you, and celebrate your journey.

Heartware at work. Always. ❤️🤖

🎲✨ CeHCI Mid-Autumn Mooncake Dice Game 2025! ✨🎲

What a WÜW! 🥮 Around 40+ students, alumni, and faculty came together to roll the dice, win prizes, and celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival CEHCI-style! 🌕

Some said, “Wow! Never seen CEHCI this packed before!” 🤩 Others said, “Perfect timing after midterms, finally a breather!” 😌

New friendships formed, laughter filled the room, may konting shyness, and well… maybe not full tummies, but at least everyone now knows what mooncake is, and what it actually tastes like! 😋

Huge thanks to our awesome faculty sponsors for making this event possible 🙌 and congrats to all our lucky winners! 🎁 Enjoy your prizes (and use them well)!

See you around, CeHCI peeps! Tambay lang kayo, this is your home too. 💚

🚀 Meet Our Future Robot Waiter! 🤖🍱

Last week (Oct 8), we kicked off an awesome Robot Building Training with Sir Hiroki Asaba from the Dept. of Computer Technology! 🧠💪 Our CEHCI Senior High School team is using the Robotis Bioloid kit to build a wheeled robot waiter, complete with a tray that’ll deliver food straight to customers. 👀🍽️

But wait, it isn't just about building a robot. We’re actually making it empathic 💚✨
Yup, this little guy won’t just deliver your order, it is designed to understand and respond to people’s emotions! 🥹🤖

Right now, the robot’s still under construction (tray design coming soon 👩‍🔧), but once it’s ready, we’ll be testing how people react to an empathic robot waiter.

👀 Wanna be part of it? Keep an eye out for updates on the CEHCI page, we’ll be calling for volunteers soon!

Title: The Clock Behind the Words: Unpacking the Role of Time in NLP and Information Retrieval
Date: 28 July 2025 (Monday)
Time: 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
,
Zoom Link: https://tinyurl.com/mrxwvek

In this webinar, the speakers from Mianwali University and Namal University, Pakistan will discuss their current research on fake news detection using temporal data. There is a potential to align the method with the goals of empathic computing, particularly in the development of systems that understand, model, and respond to human emotions and cognitive states, in the Philippine context.

On 2 July 2025, 2 undergraduate thesis group shared the progress of their research with the parents and a teacher at Ricardo P. Cruz Sr. Elementary School, (RPCSES) in Taguig city. They are working with high-functioning ASD and ADHD kids aged between 9 to 12 years old, building a game-based app with sensors for the kids. Thanks to the Ricardo P. Cruz Sr. Elementary School, (RPCSES) for the continuous support.

We hosted 9 Philippine Science High School students from around the Philippines for a computer science immersion programs at College of Computer Studies from 17 June 2025 to 2 July 2025. Students were introduced to various disciplines in Computer Science (CS) with talks, seminars and hands-on workshops as well as the future careers of CS graduates. We tailored our workshop and seminars to learning about health and assistive technology themed projects.

🖐️🤖 LOOK! Our Robot Hand is Speaking FSL!

Yup, you read that right. One of our awesome Senior High School groups at CeHCI is building a robot hand that teaches the Filipino Sign Language (FSL) alphabet and basic words — using popsicle sticks, Arduino, and servo motors!

Today, we had a special demo at the CeHCI Lab with a sign language expert to check if our robot’s gestures are on point — from letters and numbers to simple words. Student testers participated in the demo and shared their thoughts on how easy (or quirky 😅) it was to use.

The goal? To raise awareness about FSL and create more inclusive learning tools for everyone. The discussion that followed was super insightful — students asked about the build process, components used, and what’s next for this crafty, clunky, and clever little robot.

Inclusive tech doesn’t have to be boring — sometimes it’s made of sticks and powered by passion. 💡
