PUP Budget Itaas! Serve the people!
The PUP College of Tourism, Hospitality, and Transportation Management Student Council (CTHTM SC) unites the Hasmin Community in welcoming the new academic year through the annual First Day Fight (FDF) on August 22. A tradition that embodies the militant spirit, collective action, and social consciousness of the Iskolars ng Bayan.
Today, we raise our voices not only to welcome the newest members of the PUP community, but also to demand what the Iskolars ng Bayan deserve: a higher budget for PUP and an education system that genuinely serves the people. The chronic underfunding of public education continues to manifest in the everyday experiences of students. Across the PUP System, students continue to encounter conditions that make learning more difficult than it should be. They are consequences of a system that continues to place education below the priorities it deserves.
The Hasmin Community knows this reality firsthand.
We are trained in industries that are fundamentally rooted in service. Yet how can we be prepared to serve the people when the very institution that educates us continues to struggle with insufficient resources? How can we speak of excellence when students are forced to study amid inadequate facilities and limited opportunities? We call for increased and sufficient funding for PUP, a funding that prioritizes accessible and quality education for every Gabay ng Bayan.
Our struggle does not end within the university. Behind every tuition-free education is the labor of workers, farmers, and ordinary Filipinos whose taxes and labor sustain the institutions that serve the public. The same people who carry our economy are often the same people who continue to face low wages, contractualization, rising prices, landlessness, and inadequate social services.
Our future as students cannot be separated from the present struggles of the people. As future professionals in tourism, hospitality, and transportation, our education must not only prepare us to enter an industry. It must prepare us to understand whom that industry ultimately serves. Tourism cannot be separated from the communities that host it. Hospitality cannot be separated from the workers who keep it running. Transportation cannot be separated from the commuters who depend on it every day. Thus, our call for a better PUP is a call for a society that values the people who make our industries and our country move. We reject the idea that students should simply endure as an inevitable part of public education. We reject the notion that asking for a higher education budget is asking for too much.
As we welcome our fellow Iskolars ng Bayan through the First Day Fight, we invite the entire Hasmin Community to remain united, not only in celebration, but in collective action.
GABAY NG BAYAN, TULOY-TULOY ANG LABAN!
