Four academic programs of the University of the Philippines Manila successfully passed the 521st ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance Programme Assessment: the Bachelor of Science in Biology, Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Doctor of Medicine.

Front and center of this massive institutional undertaking was a coordinated effort by the University's academic leadership led by the College of Medicine Dean Charlotte Chiong, the College of Arts and Sciences Dean Ma. Teresa De Guzman, and College of Pharmacy Dean Mac Ardy Gloria, whose guidance anchored the preparatory work within their respective disciplines. This college-level dedication was matched by the strategic direction of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Bernadette Heizel Reyes and the steering leadership of the Quality Assurance Office Director Bhabita Murjani, who managed the complex task of aligning institutional operations with rigorous international benchmarks.

The successful assessment was also made possible through the collaborative efforts of the University’s offices, faculty, nonacademic staff, students, alumni and external stakeholders.

After years of navigating the rough waters, we've finally made it to the shore. Let us take this moment to thank everyone who became our anchor and our wind ⛵️

For Dr. Ciriaco B. Gato, Jr., Sometimes the detour becomes the destination. Sometimes the opportunity you never imagined becomes the one that changes your life.

In his commencement address to the new graduates of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine on Aug. 13, 2026, at UP Diliman University Theater, Dr. Ciriaco B. Gato, Jr. The graduates are encouraged to live lives of purpose, persevere through adversity, remain humble, and dedicate their careers to compassionate service, ethical leadership, and lifelong learning as physicians.

My dear graduates, today you begin a new chapter.

You leave this hall not only with that MD, but with the trust and hopes of the Filipino people.

Our UP education has shaped us to become the six-star doctors our country needs—care providers, decision makers, community leaders, managers of multidisciplinary teams, and scientists with nationalist fervor.

You have been educated and trained by the best minds in medicine, and in the best medical school in the country. Ang tanong na lang, para saan at para kanino?

Yes, continue pursuing excellence. Be the best in your field. But always remember this: The practice of medicine is not only a science. It is also an art.

Science teaches us how to diagnose, how to treat, and how to cure. But the art of medicine teaches us how to listen, how to understand, and how to care.
