The SDEAS delegation continued its academic engagements in Bali with a visit to Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha), opening a space for meaningful exchange on inclusive education, Deaf education, teacher preparation, and disability-related research.

The discussions brought Philippine and Indonesian perspectives together, highlighting shared challenges and opportunities for learning across different educational contexts. Particular interest was placed on comparative research in Deaf and inclusive education, accessibility in higher education, interpreter and teacher preparation, employment pathways, and technology-supported accessibility.

Beyond knowledge exchange, the engagement opened possibilities for joint research, faculty and student learning opportunities, academic forums, seminars, and future institutional collaboration.

A meaningful step toward building academic partnerships grounded in shared research interests, mutual learning, and a common commitment to advancing inclusive education.

The SDEAS delegationโ€™s visit to Bengkala Village in northern Bali offered a meaningful opportunity to learn from a community where Deaf and Hearing people share a unique language and a strong sense of belonging.

Bengkala, also known as โ€œDesa Kolokโ€ or โ€œDeaf Village,โ€ has a long history of hereditary deafness spanning several generations. From this history emerged Kata Kolok, a local sign language that developed within the community and is used by both Deaf and Hearing residents in everyday life, including social, educational, religious, and community settings. Research has found that a significant portion of the hearing population also uses Kata Kolok.

What makes Bengkala particularly meaningful is not simply the presence of a Deaf community, but how Deafness has become part of the communityโ€™s social and cultural life. The visit allowed SDEAS to experience this community perspective firsthand and reflect on how inclusion can take shape through shared language, relationships, and participation.

For the delegation, Bengkala was more than a place to visit; it was a place to listen, observe, and learn. It offered another perspective on Deaf communities and reminded us that there are many ways to build inclusive communities around the world.

Sometimes, the most meaningful lessons come from simply being open to another communityโ€™s way of seeing, communicating, and living.

The School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) of De La Salleโ€“College of Saint Benilde proudly celebrates a meaningful achievement at the World Disability Rehabilitation Congress (WDRC) 2026 in Bali, Indonesia.

Two research presentations from SDEAS brought Philippine perspectives on Deaf inclusion to an international audience, with one earning the distinction of Best Research Presentation.

โ€œA Training Needs Analysis of Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) on Deaf Accessibility and Inclusion,โ€ by Ms. Rochelle Martin, Ms. Jeremine Ko, and Mr. Raymond Manding, was recognized as a Best Research Presentation.

The study examines the training needs of PhilSA in strengthening Deaf accessibility and inclusion, offering insights into how institutions can build greater awareness, capacity, and readiness to create more inclusive environments. Its recognition highlights the value of research that responds to real institutional needs and contributes to practical approaches to accessibility and inclusion.

Also presented at WDRC 2026 was โ€œCommunication as Partnership: An Exploration of Workplace Communication Practices Between Hearing and Deaf Professionals,โ€ by Ms. Mara V. Ygar, Dr. Leonides D. Sulse, and Mr. Bronson L. Escalderon.

The research explores how Deaf and Hearing professionals communicate in the workplace, highlighting the role of Filipino Sign Language, interpreter-mediated communication, technology, and organizational practices in creating more accessible and inclusive professional environments.

While the two studies focus on different aspects of Deaf inclusion, they share a common goal: understanding how organizations can create environments where Deaf people can participate fully, communicate effectively, and thrive.

For SDEAS, bringing these studies to WDRC was not only an opportunity to share research, but also to listen, learn, and connect with researchers, educators, advocates, and professionals from different parts of the world. The experience opened opportunities for meaningful conversations, knowledge exchange, and potential future collaborations.

More importantly, these presentations reflect SDEASโ€™s continuing commitment to research that is grounded in the experiences of Deaf people, responsive to real-world needs, and capable of contributing to meaningful change.

Congratulations to Ms. Roch, Ms. Jere, Sir Mond, Ms. Mara, Dr. Leo, and Sir Bronson! ๐ŸคŸ

Your work brings pride to Benilde SDEAS and demonstrates how Philippine research can contribute to the global conversation on Deaf accessibility, communication, and inclusion.

From the Philippines to Bali and beyond, SDEAS continues to bring Deaf-centered research and Filipino perspectives to the world. ๐ŸŒ

Some journeys begin with a question: "What comes next?" The Benilde SDEAS Caravan brought that question to Fishermen of Christ Learning Center, where we had the opportunity to engage with learners and open conversations about education, careers, and the possibilities beyond the classroom. More than simply sharing information, the session was about encouraging young minds to recognize their strengths, explore their interests, and imagine a future shaped by their own aspirations. We are grateful to the school community for welcoming us and giving us the space to connect, listen, and share. May the dreams sparked today become the paths they confidently choose tomorrow.
