Antibiotics are medications that treat bacterial infections by focusing on the vital structures and functions that bacteria require to live and proliferate without endangering human cells. First of all, by weakening the cell wall and causing rupture, antibiotics either kill bacteria or prevent them from growing. Followed by the protein synthesis. In this process, no proteins are produced due to ribosomal inhibition. Then, the DNA replication process is inhibited by DNA synthesis. Lastly, RNA synthesis is when RNA is not produced, cellular processes are disturbed.
Bacteria are unable to survive efficiently when these important processes are interfered with. Crucially, antibiotics do not work against viruses like those that cause the flu or the common cold because they are made to act on bacterial structures and processes. Antibiotics specifically target bacteria to eliminate them rather than the human host's cells.
Darwin's theory of selection and survival is exemplified by the way antibiotic resistance spreads throughout microbial populations due to ongoing selection pressure brought on by the effects of human activity, particularly the misuse, overuse, and underuse of antibiotics.

Once the bacteria has evolved, it undergoes multiple strategies that transform it to survive antibiotics. The enzymatic inactivation, target site modification, reduced permeability and efflux, metabolic bypass, substrate overproduction, and biofilm formation. Due to antibiotic abuse and overuse, low public awareness, and lax regulatory enforcement, antibiotic resistance is emerging as a significant public health concern in the Philippines. Growing antibiotic resistance increases the severity of illness, healthcare expenses, and mortality by making infections more difficult to treat. Always remember, use it with proper guidance and knowledge, not with carelessness, which could turn into severeness.
