The 1st Mindanao ERDT Congress officially begins at the D'Orchard Event Hall in Iligan City, with international visiting professors, distinguished guests, university officials, faculty members, scholars, and representatives from participating institutions in attendance. The event brings together members of the ERDT community to celebrate research excellence and innovation, as well as the continuing pursuit of advancing engineering education in the Philippines.

Delivering the welcoming remarks, Jefferson A. Hora, PhD, Dean of the College of Engineering of the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), emphasized that the Congress is not intended to serve merely as a venue for lectures and presentations. Rather, it provides an opportunity for learning, mentoring, and collaboration, allowing scholars and members of the engineering community to engage with one another and benefit from shared knowledge and experiences. He further highlighted the gathering as an important milestone for MSU-IIT, marking the first time since its participation in the ERDT program that the institution has welcomed five international visiting professors.

Looking beyond the Congress, Dr. Hora expressed hope that this milestone will pave the way for even greater international engagement, with the possibility of hosting international conferences in the future. He also shared his aspiration that when the Congress comes to an end, participants will leave with not only knowledge, but also partnerships—connections that can develop into meaningful collaborations and contribute to the continued advancement of engineering research and education.

Standing Beside the Cardinals: A Message of Support to Our Mapúan Community

The past few days of nonstop bad weather have been tough on everyone. We hear you, we see the challenges you are facing, and we understand the frustration around disrupted classes, and academic continuity during these difficult times.

Your safety, well-being, and ability to learn effectively are what matter most to us. We know that many of you may have been dealing with flooding, power and connectivity issues, or trying to catch up after missing crucial class days. We want to assure you that we are taking active, concrete steps to help you navigate this term safely and smoothly.

Here are the immediate measures we are implementing to further support everyone:

1. Extended Enrollment Window for Upperclassmen and Graduate Students until August 27, 2026, 5PM
We recognize the difficulties many returning students faced during enrollment amid the recent weather disruptions. To ensure no upperclassman or graduate student gets left behind, special considerations and enrollment extensions are granted until August 27, 2026 (Thursday), 5:00 PM. You may proceed with your enrollment until this date.
Note: For those students who will be able to enroll, kindly be reminded that since this is considered late enrollment, it is now your responsibility to coordinate with your professors for any missed requirement or class activity to help you navigate and catch up.

2. Academic Flexibility & Context-Based Considerations
We understand that every student’s situation is different depending on their local area. Our Deans and Program Chairs are actively assessing the impact on all programs. Faculty members have been advised to extend maximum consideration regarding attendance, deadlines, and academic tasks based on individual student cases or scenarios, as needed.

3. Enhanced Digital Learning Support via Blackboard
To help you make up for missed class days without feeling overwhelmed, additional learning content and supplemental resources will be uploaded on Blackboard. These serve as self-paced guides so you can learn without falling behind.

4. Transition Assistance & Make-up Class Guidance
We are reviewing overall academic schedules to provide structured transition assistance. Options for make-up classes and learning windows are currently being carefully mapped out to ensure you receive complete instructions without overloading your schedules.

5. Student Support & Advising
For students needing help catching up on missed course requirements, you may reach out to our Center for Student Advising for needed help. Our Center for Guidance and Counseling is also fully available to provide mental health support should you need any.

As part of our commitment to further provide every student with a better overall experience, we are also actively reviewing our institutional disaster response and protocols to ensure consistent and timely communications moving forward. We are also looking into additional ways to extend aid to heavily affected Mapúans.

We are dedicated to standing beside you through every challenge and ensuring you have the support you need to succeed. Please take care, stay safe, and don't hesitate to reach out to your respective departments, student services, student councils, or our other official channels should you need any assistance.
