𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐈𝐍, 𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐓!

On September 21, 1972, more than five decades ago, President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. signed Proclamation No. 1081, effectively placing the Philippines under Martial Law. In commemorating this era, we seek to remember one of the country’s darkest chapters in history, where countless Filipinos lost their lives through the violations of human rights, torture, unexplained disappearances, and extra-judicial killings. 𝐏𝐋𝐌 𝐏𝐀𝐆𝐆 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟓𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐬 𝐠𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐲𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲.

Amnesty International reports around 107,240 victims of martial law, some of which were killed, tortured, imprisoned, and disappeared. The Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission or HRVVMC officially recognized 11,103 victims, and documented nearly 100,000 total arrests, 5,500 cases of torture, 2,500 executions, and millions of internal displacements due to military operations. Notable figures such as Macli-ing Dulag, who opposed the Marcos regime’s planned dam along Chico river, and PLM’s own Liliosa Hilao, who spoke about the death of democracy during martial law, were brutally killed by the government to silence them.

In remembering and honoring those who came before us, and those who paved the way to escape this horrid time for our nation, we fight against those who choose to erase them from our past. We urge our fellow students and Filipinos to resist these forms of revisionism, to continue our duty to uphold our democracy and the rule of law, and to fight against corruption in all its forms. 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐎𝐄𝐒 𝐃𝐀𝐘 ✨🇵🇭

A time to honor the brave Filipinos who dedicated their lives, courage, and sacrifices to the pursuit of freedom, justice, and nationhood.

This day serves as a reminder that the story of the Philippines was not shaped by a single hero alone. It was built through the collective courage of countless Filipinos, both known and unnamed, who stood for what was right and worked for a better future.

As the nation remembers their sacrifices, Filipinos are also encouraged to reflect on their role in continuing the legacy of the country's heroes. Patriotism does not only live in the pages of history. It is also found in the willingness to serve, uphold what is right, and contribute to the progress of communities and the nation.

May the courage of the country's heroes continue to inspire every Filipino to become responsible, compassionate, and active citizens.

JOINT STATEMENT OF THE PLM STUDENT COUNCILS AND ORGANIZATIONS ON THE INVITATION OF PRESIDENT FERDINAND “BONGBONG” MARCOS JR. AS THE 58TH COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER AND THE CONFERRAL OF AN HONORARY DOCTORATE DEGREE UPON HIM

Graduation is a significant milestone in the journey of every Iskolar ng Bayan. It is a recognition of years of sacrifice, perseverance, learning, and collective struggle within the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. It honors not only the graduates, but also the families, communities, and individuals who stood with them throughout their journey.

It is a celebration that rightfully belongs to the graduates and to everyone who helped them reach this moment.

As Haribons, we are guided by the ideals of Kaunlaran, Kadakilaan, at Karunungan. These are not merely words attached to the name of our institution. They embody the kind of citizens, scholars, and leaders that PLM seeks to mold—individuals who pursue meaningful progress, uphold integrity and dignity, and possess the courage to think critically and stand for what is right.

It is precisely because graduation is such a defining milestone that the choice of a commencement speaker matters.

While we respect President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as the Chief Executive of the Republic of the Philippines and as our invited guest, respect for his office does not oblige us to regard him as a representation of the collective values and aspirations of every Haribon.

See the post for the full statement.

🚌 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗣 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗣! 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗔 𝗣𝗢! 👀

Every journey has its own route, and for our 𝗣𝗟𝗠 𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗚 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀, this one was filled with service, leadership, responsibilities, and memories that made the ride worthwhile.

But beyond the titles they carried, their journey as 𝗜𝘀𝗸𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 carries a greater responsibility: to give back to the people who made their education possible. 𝗕𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗼, 𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗸 𝘀𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝗼. 💸

Because a degree is not the end of the journey. It is a promise.

A promise that the knowledge gained will not be kept for oneself. A promise that public service will remain a service—not a privilege. A promise that leadership will never be about power, but about people.

In a time when public service is too often forgotten, may their journey remind us of what we should always stand for: 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰.

The jeep may be stopping here, but the 𝗕𝗜𝗬𝗔𝗛𝗘𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗔𝗕𝗨𝗟𝗨𝗛𝗔𝗡 continues. Congratulations! 🚌🧡

𝑰𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒐 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒖𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒐𝒓 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒅𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓?
