The signing of Proclamation No. 1081 54 years ago became Ferdinand Marcos Sr.โ€™s free pass to carry out unlawful political arrests and prolong his grip on power, consigning thousands to suffer a series of widespread human rights violations. Until today, there hasnโ€™t been a complete list of Martial Law victims, as the abuses were done underground and evidence remained elusive. ๐Ÿ‘,๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ• were killed. ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŽ,๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ incarcerated. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ“,๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ tortured. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ• disappeared. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’ journalists killed. But only ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ,๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ‘ were recognized and compensated. These figures may be imprecise, but that is not to say history has been wrong or inaccurate in recording the past. The mere existence of these figures tells us the cruelties of this regime happened, and ๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐ฐ๐ž ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ž๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ๐ž ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐›๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ฐ ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐ฒ, ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ซ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญโ€”๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ฐ๐จโ€”๐ข๐ฌ ๐š ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฆ๐š๐ง ๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž ๐ฎ๐ง๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฒ ๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ ๐จ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ. Regardless of our political affiliations, it is imperative upon us to summon our humanity, to extend more compassion toward our people and less veneration for those in power.

Today, as the political legacy of the Marcoses endures, so does their insistence on a distorted narrative that frames the declaration of Martial Law as a state necessity. This denial of responsibility, along with the consistent lack of remorse and reparation for the crimes done by their family, leaves a distasteful impression that history can be bent to favor or pardon an oppressor.

Distorting history is a blatant disregard for the journalists who went above and beyond to write despite state censorship; the archivists who preserved records of human rights abuses; the historians who wrote about our past for the future to rememberโ€”๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ๐ž ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐ฎ๐ง๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐š๐ข๐ฅ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐œ๐š๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐›๐ž ๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐จ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐ฆ๐ž๐๐ข๐š ๐ง๐จ๐ซ ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐›๐ฅ๐ข๐œ ๐จ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐จ๐ง.

This digital age has provided shortcuts to information but makes us easier targets of digital and computational propaganda. Distorted information comes at hand without being sought after; thatโ€™s what makes it easy, fast, and entertaining. Our knowledge of historical facts becomes more vulnerable each day because of these ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฏ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐ฌโ€”because of self-proclaimed keepers of the truth who repackage data and publish it as โ€œcontentโ€ on social media but cannot so much as prove their credibility, and because of generative models of AI that can produce fabricated, distorted, and decontextualized historical claims dressed in eloquence. But ๐ฆ๐š๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ž ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ค๐ž ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ฏ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ž. May we still seek answers even when they require actual work and rigor instead of merely consuming what we see. Historical records reveal what is true, and we must know how to distinguish it from what we want to be true.

๐“๐จ ๐๐ž๐ง๐ฒ that the atrocities of Martial Law happened is to reject reality; ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ฒ it as mandatory is to relinquish our humanity; and ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ž๐ฅ๐ those liable from accountability is to stand in the way of justice.

It is indeed guaranteed by our Constitution, our freedom of speech and expression, but ๐ฆ๐š๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ž ๐›๐ž ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐›๐ž๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ฐ๐ž ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐จ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

The Repvblic officially held its onsite ๐†๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐Ž๐ซ๐ ๐š๐ง๐ข๐ณ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐Ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง last August 27. In preparation of a busy schedule for the organization, officers from various committees and the Executive Board gathered in one room to discuss the plans, processes, and what the future lies ahead. โœจ๏ธ

Alongside professional matters were also activities that aimed to deepen the camraderie amongst members and their passion for service. Nagsisilbi itong isang sinag ng pag-asaโ€”na kahit ang demokrasya ang madalas maging dahilan ng ating pagtatalo, ito rin ang nagbibigay sa atin ng kapangyarihang tumindig para sa bayan.

Bilang estudyante ng Political Science, tayo ang inaasahang maging tulay patungo sa maayos na lipunan. Sa gitna ng pagkakahati-hati natin, tayo ang may tungkuling hubugin ang kamalayan ng masa at ipag-isa ang mga Pilipino tungo sa isang pambansang pangarap. Gamitin natin ang ating pribilehiyong bumoses at umaksyon upang maging tagadala ng pagbabago at pag-ugnayin ang watak-watak nating pananaw.

This Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our entire community gathers as one family, filling the pews with songs of praises and hearts full of gratitude. For today, we celebrate the birth of our Blessed Motherโ€”the epitome of unwavering and overflowing love. In Maryโ€™s fiat, she surrendered everything to God, offering a resounding โ€œyesโ€ in complete trust of His divine plan.

We now turn to Mary as the ultimate exemplar of faithful love across all states of life. Whether we are stressing over exams, discerning our future paths, serving in student organizations, or simply navigating friendships, she shows us that love is an active, living, commitment. Through her, may we be reminded that leadership is not about titles, but about humility and servant leadershipโ€”leading by lifting up our classmates and supporting one another through every trial.
