🌿🔬 SPOTLIGHT ON: Biology Department Graduate Students & Faculty! 🔬🌿

A successful showcase of excellence and knowledge was delivered by our students and faculty from the Biology Department during the 25th Research Spotlight, proudly hosted by the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM), MSU - Main Campus, held earlier today, August 27, 2026. Under the theme "Bridging Disciplines Across Natural and Applied Sciences," our presenters for Parallel Session 2 highlighted their meaningful and hard-earned research studies:

°🧬 Onaya P. Abdulmalik-Labe – DNA Barcoding of Common Freshwater Eleotrids (Gobiiformes: Eleotridae) in the Philippines, with a Global Comparison and Notes on Their Conservation and Management

°🐚 Jovel Jean Malon – Assessment of Mollusk Diversity in the Mangrove Forest of Barangay Demologan Bacolod and Barangay Kawit Oriental Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte

°🐟 Alandonni Akir Jr. – Geometric Morphometric Analysis of Barbodes tumba in Dagayonan Lake, Lanao del Sur, Philippines

Stepping into our roles as the new set of MBGSS officers was a huge milestone, and doing it for the first time under the leadership of Dr. Jamael Abato made all the difference. As our Graduate Coordinator and Advisor, he showed us what true mentorship looks like by guiding us step-by-step with incredible patience, sharp intellect, and an inspiring work ethic right from day one. He didn’t just give us tasks; he empowered us to lead with confidence.

We are deeply proud to begin this journey under someone so brilliant and dedicated to student growth. This photo at the scenic MSU Marawi Golf Course marks the beginning of our term, and we are beyond grateful to Doc Abato for setting such an extraordinary standard for our team! 🎓✨

ONE BIOLOGY FAMILY: DEPARTMENT ORIENTATION & INDUCTION OF OFFICERS A.Y. 2026–2027 🧬✨

The Science Lecture Hall (SLH) was filled with energy and academic pride this afternoon as the entire Biology Department gathered for the General Department Orientation! The event was well-attended by our esteemed faculty and staff, as well as our vibrant community of undergraduate, MS Biology, and PhD in Biology students.

The afternoon commenced with inspiring opening remarks delivered by Ma'am Husna Dimapalao, Chairperson of the Department of Biology, setting a welcoming and motivated tone for the entire gathering.

Following the opening, Prof. Merimee Caralde formally introduced the backbone of our department the faculty and staff of the Biology Department alongside the announcement of the specialized courses they will be handling this semester.

An essential segment of the orientation was the discussion of key department guidelines and various graduate opportunities, providing students with valuable guidance for their academic and professional journeys ahead.

A major highlight of the event was the official introduction of the leaders who will shape the student experience this academic year:

•Prof. Rhea Mae Yungao introduced the new set of officers for the SOLSS organization (representing our undergraduate students)

•Dr. Jamael Abato introduced the new set of officers for the MBGSS organization (representing our graduate scholars)

The program culminated in a solemn and proud moment as all newly elected student officers took their oath of office on stage, officially led by our Department Chairperson, Dr. Husna A. Dimapalao.

To formally wrap up the event, Prof. Dominique Jay Barriga delivered the closing remarks, leaving everyone inspired and equipped for the journey ahead.
With our dedicated faculty, staff, and newly inducted student leaders at the helm, the Biology Department is more than ready for a year of excellence, discovery, and unity. Welcome to the First Semester, everyone! 🎓🌱

Earlier this morning at 9:00 AM, the MBGSS Graduate Studies Orientation was successfully held for our MS Biology and PhD in Biology students!

The event marked the official introduction of the newly elected set of officers for the Biology Graduate Students Society (MBGSS), who are fully committed to serving and supporting the student body this academic year. Our esteemed faculty members handling the graduate programs were also introduced.

The program commenced with inspiring opening remarks from Dr. Husna Dimapalao. To guide everyone on their academic journey, our Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Jamael Abato, thoroughly discussed the essential guidelines for those currently enrolled and pursuing MS Bio and PhD Bio. The briefing covered:

• Admission Requirements
• Admission and Retention Policies
• Dissertation & Thesis Guidance: Insights on potential research topics that students can explore.
• Faculty Advisorship: A guide on matching students with faculty advisers who are leading experts in their chosen fields of study.

The orientation concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Anabella Villarino, leaving everyone motivated for the semester ahead.
