As the College of Public Affairs (CPA) celebrates its 65th Founding Anniversary, and as Mindanao State University marks its 65th year of excellence and service this September, the Department of Community Development is one with this historic celebration.

The Department likewise commemorates 65 years of Community Development education and service, tracing its roots to the early years of MSU when the Bachelor of Science in Community Development was established as one of the pioneering programs of the University.

For six and a half decades, the Department has remained committed to its mission of empowering communities, developing responsive community practitioners, and advancing inclusive and sustainable development. Through generations of students, educators, and community partners, Community Development has continued to be a bridge between knowledge and action, the academe and the community, and aspirations and meaningful change.

As we celebrate 65 years of heritage, service, and transformative education, we honor the people who built the foundation of the Department and look forward to a future where Community Development continues to create empowered, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities.

"From an Unknown Program to Indispensable Calling"

The Department of Community Development was deeply honored by the inspiring tribute message delivered by Dr. Marian Myrtle G. Onod during the Recognition Rites and Tribute to Parents of Batch Rinayag 2026.

Dr. Onod reflected on the humble beginnings of the program, when many questioned its relevance, and celebrated how perseverance, dedicated mentors, and passionate graduates transformed it into a respected profession.

Subsequently, she emphasized that Sustainable Community Development is far more than a profession—it is a lifelong calling dedicated to empowering people, transforming lives, and fostering resilient and inclusive communities. She reminded the graduates that genuine development is measured not by infrastructure or completed projects alone, but by strengthened families, restored hope, and communities united through compassion, integrity, and perseverance.

Dr. Onod also underscored the continuing relevance of community development in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. While technology can enhance efficiency and provide valuable tools, she emphasized that it can never replace the uniquely human qualities of empathy, moral judgment, trust-building, and servant leadership. She challenged the graduates to embrace technological advancements responsibly while remaining steadfast in their commitment to human dignity, participatory development, and sustainable change. Her message further highlighted that the future of community development lies in building institutions that inspire trust, nurturing leaders who serve with integrity, and empowering communities to become active partners in their own development.

As she reflected on the remarkable journey of the Department of Community Development, Dr. Onod expressed her pride in witnessing former students become faculty members, academic leaders, and mentors to a new generation of community development practitioners. She reminded the graduates that the greatest legacy of an educator is found not in titles or achievements, but in the lives of those who continue the mission of service.

As the graduates of Batch Rinayag 2026 embark on a new chapter, may they carry forward the values of compassion, humility, resilience, and excellence, becoming catalysts for sustainable development and positive transformation in the communities they are called to serve.

PARANGAL AT PASASALAMAT SA BATCH RINAYAG CLASS 2026

On July 31, 2026, at the Meranaw Cultural Heritage Center, the Department of Community Development celebrated the remarkable journey and accomplishments of our graduands, and giving appreciation to their supportive parents.

DR. MARIAN MYRTLE G. ONOD joined us as our Tribute Speaker. As a valued mentor and retired faculty member of the Department, her inspiring wisdom and encouraging words left a lasting impressions with everyone , not just the graduands and their parents, but the faculty and the department too.

She reminded us that CD isn't just a job but it is a calling; real development isn't about buildings or finished projects, but about transforming lives, united communities, and rekindled hope.

To our graduands, remember what Dr. Marian Myrtle Onod said, your diploma is a symbol of your perseverance, sacrifice, and hope. The future of Community Development is now in your hands.

The department will always be open with you as your mentor. We'll miss you, Batch Rinayag.
